An emissions control service is basically where they run a dose of fuel system cleaner through it. We used to offer it at the dealers where I was a service advisor. It's useless.

It's the older diesels that they aren't happy about. Apparently the emissions are more harmful to the environment than first thought. You will be fine with a new diesel because they now have the diesel particulate filter for this reason.

I don't think that sounds way off. Even at 50mph. Once your running at a constant speed mpg does seem to go up quite high.
