My advice would be buy the adapter with the 0.2m extention on it, the basic adapter can be a bit short if you try and put the phone under the armrest.

I called my local VW Dealer and they gave me the code for free. If i can remember correctly all you need is the serial number of the RCD510 and the VIN number of your car. You need to press the MEDIA button, then select MDI. Aux is the 35mm input.

If not i would put some mp3's on the usb drive and try and play them, then you will know if your USB drive is working with the MDI.
