Re: sNOOOOOOOOooow =(

My Volvo S80 seems to have a magnetic backside which attracts nitwits who have been into it three times. Each time the main Volvo dealer has been cheaper than the bucket shops, same with my daughter's Fiat Panda, so get a quote there first. If VAG are expensive, then try the biggest accident dealer ...

Re: DVD Sat nav (how much??)

Personally i would never ever bother with an in built sat nav as they are incredibly over priced - save yourself money and buy a better standalone unit like a tom tom. My wife currently has an insignia with it built in and its ok at what it does but i find its limited compared to a good standalone ...

Re: DVD Sat nav (how much??)

Don't forget to add £150 for a TomTom XXL IQ. If, of course, you want routing that will deliver the shortest route by being able to discriminate between B roads, warn you with up to date safety speed camera locations and cut journey times with accurate traffic info. The NavTeq based RNS does none of...

If you've seen a password request in the pairing process I'm almost certain you don't need to change your hardware. Pairing is like sex - nearly all the difficulty lies in the first successful attempt. Persist and you will get it to latch. All the numbers need to go in so you do need to be quick. Si...

Re: Snow Chains

Where does it say they are worse on icy roads? They ARE worse on dry and wet roads in normal temperatures because they put less rubber on the road due to the walls being less flexible and having throats and sypes cut into them and the winter tyres you buy here in the UK will be made of a harder comp...

Re: snow

Yep, tyres are a biggie. These are what I have on my Defender and there are no conditions they can't deal with. When I used to go out with a couple of mates in Wales we frequently advised walkers that they would not be able to walk where we had just driven (and not because of any 'damage' we'd done ...

Re: Nightmare engine probs - advice please!!!

http://www.encyclo.co.uk/define/Rescission As your solicitor has probably told you, this is the bit of law you need. IANAL. It's hugely difficult and I have heard of Mercedes giving in but no one else. I was a director of company where we tried to give an hilariously unreliable Lancia Gamma back. T...

Re: snow

Torque is the enemy. The more you have, the bigger the problem. Low profiles with smooth edges just make it even harder. You need the wheels to turn smoothly at the speed of a watch's second hand with the edges of the tyre biting into the soft stuff. Plenty of salt and sacking if you can find some w...

>Ok, but how do I use the edge of the tyre ! Demo here. Steer very slightly off straight ahead and make tiny, tiny movements left and right so the edge of the tyre cuts into the snow at a very small angle to the forwar...

Re: Snow Chains

My tyre guy says there are adequate stocks of all models. They do a roaring trade in them once every 9 or 10 years or so then everyone forgets them. They're not really necessary in the UK as we only get conditions that require them for a few hours every year and then not everywhere. They work by giv...

Re: snow

Any Land Rover Club will tell you that it is the skill of the driver, not the tyres on the vehicle, that makes the difference in snow and mud. Watch a Swede or a Russian drive a perfectly ordinary vehicle on ordinary tyres in it. And they prove this relentlessly to newbies on outings and trials when...

The heated seats are the hottest I have ever known. You can make toast on 'em . . . .

A joy on days like today.

Re: At Last!

How much is the upgrade likely to be? Have to say, after a few weeks, I find the nav unit pretty disappointing and my TomTom has found its way into the Roc. Like the big RNS display and the clear maps and most of the software. But the TomTom is indispensable. Speed cam warnings, better routing - (mu...

Re: Winter protection detail.

I'm not sure it's for me.

I live in the sticks. On the way home last night a tractor and trailer combo gave the car a mud bath, though I managed, just, to keep it out of the hedge. I might have a go in the spring. It's hard to avoid the car looking like an off roader in this weather.

Re: CB radio

CB failed in England and Europe generally because of the short range of the sets after EU legislation. Only good for about 2 kilometres and struggled with that. New sets these days don't comply. I have one in my Defender. It's really useful when you go offroading in groups. But apart from demonstrat...

Re: 8GB SDHC card = monumentally slow

I doubt VW designed the SD interface (which I didn't know was there for two months!), the USB interface and it certainly didn't design the iPod interface. USB and iPod are well-mapped territory. SD is a nightmare and was regarded as 'untouchable' by DSLR camera manufacturers as even when it's quick,...
