VW Driver Magazine Performance Figures

we have been in touch with Neil Birkitt of VW Driver Magazine who will hopefully be plugging the forum in the February issue give coverage to a meet at a later date, this should help our membership to continue to grow

Neil has kindly consented we can use the figures below, they road tested in the scirocco in their november issue, i know we are all curious how the scirocco stacks up against its cousins, the figures are for a manual, Neil has informed me of the technique they use which is brutal but effective and means they get better figures than dsg, but don't recommend it

Really interesting numbers Andy! I understand that these figures are bourne out of harsh performance testing but why would VW publish reduced 0-62 times for the ROC whenever members of this forum have managed to get 0-60's in the region of 6.5s for the DSG (Over half a second quicker than published)? Any clues gents? (I suppose it will probably come down to the testing technique) Not that the numbers make a blind bit of difference, it brought a smile to my face to see that an ST got a right good showing up by one of our members - Good work mate. :yes:
Anyway, I've still go many more months before I get to play but until then I'll keep enjoying this forum and build the excitement!

Thanks for that Andy, excellent work!!!!

Glad to know I wasn't going insane when I was testing the R32 and Scirocco back to back and this goes some way to confirming what I found, I guess the biggest difference is how the power is achieved, albeit I think it would be hard to achieve those figures with the current weather. :)
Car is now Sold!!!!! BMW 7 Series for now as nice and big but holding out for something a little special as my toy :)

How do these figures occur?
Even the factory has not such optimistic numbers for it's cars.
Most road tests figures occur with a driver , codriver, instruments for measuring car's capabilities
and a half or 3/4 tank.

CTRNutter needless to say these are purely performance figures and other factors come into play in the real world, straight line figures match my gut reaction of last week, gets more intersting when the corners come into play :)

What technique do they use that produces better figures than the factory ones?

Andy owns a Pirelli and I have personally had an R32 and and the Scirocco side by side difference being I was driving the R32 (Mk 5) and I hammered the sh!t out of the R32 from differing speeds and gears and there was nothing in it! whether you belive that or not its a fact lol I am more than happy to meet anybody off here and give a demonstration or how how about ask my friend Neil who also owns an R32 and doing a few guys on here some lovely deals on parts lol his thoughts on the matter (working for the vag group he has a little more inside info on the cars)!

I took the exact same stance as you before I went ahead and put it to the test, and manafactureres have been doing this for a long time,you only have to look at the Mitsubishi evo which they claimed only had 260-270 bhp when the VI GSR was released after a few rolling road sessions turns out the cars were running 300+ bhp!

remember these are 0-60mph times as well not 0-62 (100kph), in reality more intersted in the in gear times myself :)

Same here, more so higher up to be honest, its knowing what speeds the car is capable of when pulling onto a mototway, or overtaking etc :)

Maybe VW are trying to keep the insurance group down by publishing higher figures? The numbers are astonishing, I hardly believe them, although the lighter scirocco should be quicker than the golf GTI which has pretty much the same figures from VW!!!

I used to work very closely with BMW (cars and bikes) and I know that the times BMW publish for their cars are meant to represent what an average driver in average conditions coud achieve without killing the care. It could be VW have done the same as it's more realistic than a professional driver in a test mule on a private test track.

Well I say grey its anthracite/dark grey/blackish call it what you will.

Looks great though, i wanted the truffle colour originally but then saw the blue exdemo with grey and bought it. Should be picking it up just as soon as i can get my private plate switched over. Can't wait.

Some interesting figures there!!

Has anyone been along to the pod??? What is the approximate weight difference between the std gti and the rocco??

LOL Thought I'd take advantage of the cold weather, car was pulling well that day although traction was a problem!!

It hasnt been taken round the TG test track yet but did go up against the mini cooper s on fifth gear :)

I'm hoping by summer I'll have a remap, lighter alloys (pro race 1.2's) with R888 rubber, H&R Springs, Milltek and if GruppEm release their induction kit that will be fitted too... I was going to go the whole hog and get a K04 turbo too but I might as well hang fire and see what happens with the R20T.

Either way with the above in mind I'm looking forward to maybe low 13's if I go sooner I'm more than happy to let you know :)

Cheers CTR!!

Quite a few people did comment on how supprisingly quick the rocco was. And even with the FWD boys struggling with traction that was a decent time as std. I think the first and only mod I would look to do would be a remap.... over on the gti forum it seems that revo is probably the way to go, although the difference in gains offered by others is negligble really.

Having not driven the rocco (yet) does it wheel spin really easy?? How easy or difficult is it to get the power down?

Its not too bad, I get use of my brothers Mk 5 R32 as frequently as I use the Rocco and it must be said the grip levels on the R32 are in another league but as far as cornering goes they're not worlds apart as you might imagine, I'd be happy to take you for a spin if you come along to one of the meets :)
