Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
.. wonder if this is the start of a problem or just a symptom of crap roads where I live.
How are people doing with their well screwed together car? Mine didn't exhibit anything on the test drive but the roads near where I live have terrible surfacing and potholes

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
Mine seems solid, with the suspension working overtime, and wheels travelling up and down like a mad thing everything is serene and quiet on board. The roads aren't smooth (or clean) around here either. The suspension and tyres are really quiet, every thing seems solid and well damped and i can't say i've noticed anything that would suggest flex in the body.
Are you really talking about 'potholes' or just bumpy/undulating surafces, broken tarmac, ruts, bumps and such. Proper potholes will do real damage to any car, unless you want to drive around in a Bowler or a rally car, even then you''ll have wheel damage. I snapped the rear suspension on an S3 once, that was fun crawling home at 10mph, crabbing sideways . if you're having to negotiate deep potholes (there's quite a few on my route too) they need to be avoided or crawled over like you would a speed bump, i know sometimes they catch you out though, on unfamiliar roads or when new ones appear.
If you're talking about crawling over potholes or deep ruts etc, then no my car has no noises that would suggest body flex when doing that.

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
Definitely mainly potholes. The ones on local roads are ok, it's the ruts in the road/manhole covers on 40mph stretches where it's hard to slow down to crawl speed and avoid. Those seem very crashy and cause that aforementioned rattle. Uneven surfaces show it up to a less degree. Only on the left side of the car, right side is absolutely fine.

S8N
No rattles or creaking and I have some fairly uneven, potholed, broken tar type roads around where I am. Everything feels solid as a rock and well screwed together (hopes he is not tempting fate here ). I would swing past the dealer and take him for a spin over the same potholes and get things checked out mate.

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
Mine seems to have a knocking noise from the rear three quarter although i think it is the rear seat belt knocking on the plastic trim in the rear. I need to fasten the rear seat belts to see if this goes away. I had a similar noise on my V6 4 Motion which was a nightmare to cure involving numerous trips to the dealer, this was down to body flex.

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
When i first got mine a couple of times the drivers door/trim creaked. I dropped the window a tad and it went away. when i rolled it back up the creak returned.I treated the upper window rubber with a little wd40 applied with a rag and have not had the problem since. Also this should stop the windows sticking when the car is frozen. Hope this helps..

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
Thanks for the feedback. I am going to see if I can nail down where it is coming from (now you mention rear quarter.. I think that's the area). Shall see and then take it to the dealer if I cannot resolve it myself

Definitely still got a couple of creaks. Going to take it into the dealer and exercise my warranty rights. According to the warranty, any vehicle under 6 months old/5000 miles.. they will deal EVERYTHING like that. Got to do it soon, I have 4600 on the clock!

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
mine creaks like you would not believe! especially when going slowly over uneven roads, its creaks from the rear quarters. ITs currently in with VW, they are replacing most of the rear trim panels inside so we'll see if that helps

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
Yes, do let us know what you find out.
it's a little concerning because it sounds like body flex, a modern 5 strar NCAP shell should be stiffer than that shouldn't it? although if the trim panels have a little movement i guess they could just be shifting a little under thier own weight as you go over bumps.

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
Quick check on way home.
1. Definitely coming from windows. Put windows down a little bit and it was effectively gone.
2. Passenger door trim isn't quite aligned or attached right. That's banging against the door.
Will book in with VW to silicon windows and re-align door

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
got my car back from VW yesterday, they havent replaced all the panels they said they would as some are on back order, but its being booked in again. Judging by the report though, they really did a thorough check and the creaking noises have all but gone now, feels and sounds much more solid. Also the boot lid now pops up much further than it did before, as it was sometimes not unlatching correctly. This seems sorted too. Will wait for them to get the other parts in (think its the cowling under the windscreen to help with any rattles for there), and when they are fitted ill report back, probably be a while though.
Got my DRLs turned off finally too

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
I'm curious why they're replacing panels, and how that could be any different to removing and refitting the existing ones. Unless there's something we don't know and some have been revised (seems unlikely), aren't they just changing out identical parts?. More to the point, how on earth did you get them to agree to it? It seems very strange.
Glad you're getting it sorted though. Mine's still quiet, the only excess noise is that the wheel arch liners and underbody trays are extremely noisy when driving on gravel, more than on any other car i've had. I guess it's all liners and plastic trays for protection, rather than any rubberised paint under there. It's extremly alraming though, it sounds like it's destroying the car and it's getting really depressing because the road into mine is so covered in gravel and mud at the moment (bloody farmers ). I'm doing that bit of the journey at like 5 mph trying not to damage the car. I hosed out the wheel arches today because they were chock full of mud. It's not a pleasant experience having a brand new car when the roads are like this because it seems like it's getting wrecked already

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
i know what you mean. I dont know why they replaced them but im glad they did and it seems to have fixed the problem, no noise at all. As for getting them to agree, i didnt even ask, i was expecting them to do like you said and play around with the exisiting ones, but they called me to say that they needed the car for another day becuase they were ordering in parts. IM pleased with the service i have to say, its Citygate High Wycombe

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
Spoke to my dealer. My beloved Roc is in on Tuesday morning to have all the seals checked as it's definitely coming from the frameless windows. At this point, I could have got some silicon spray from Halfords or whatever but would rather be sure that is the actual problem

Re: Passenger door rattle/creaking over potholes...
sorry to ressurect an old thread, just thought id let you know, esp S8N that my car has just come back from VW for the second time round, and now all internal trim, internal boot panels, boot trim clips, scuttle panel under windscreen and probably more etc, with the exception of the dash area and gear leaver console etc, have all been replaced.
seems more solid than the day i got it now, no squeaks over uneven roads and anything

Hello all,
I have noticed the same thing from the drivers side. After reading this thread I think I will book in with the dealer a.s.a.p.
Thanks
Nick
