Suspention knocking

Post by monkeyman »

Only recently ive noticed a knocking coming from the nearside front suspention when stationary or moving off when on full lock. Had a little grab and tug of the wheel, spring and the strut on both sides and the spring on the nearside could twist (no more the a couple mm). :eyepop: Im making an educated guess that the twisting of the spring is whats causing the knocking so im going to take it to VW in a couple weeks when I get back from hoilday. Has anybody else come across this considering its sitting on the stock suspention?? I will be jacking it up at the weekend to have a play with the wheel off the ground so will report back then.

The only queiry I have, as im using the car on to go on hoilday soon will it be safe enough the do the round trip that is Dartford to Blackpool or should I take it in and get it checked 1st?? As I dont want to have to spent any more money getting transport up to the north. ;)

I haven,t done anything with the suspention, Thats why im a little puzzled. I think its just taken a pounding from all the pot holes that are about at the moment. But its booked into VW on wednesday so will have it looked at. :magnify: Its still under warranty so there no harm in having it looked at, as It could be quite a major problem. Better to be safe than sorry.

Will post what was said about it when I get the car back on Wednesday/Thursday.

I'm looking forward to their report as my car's been back to vw 3 times, had top mounts changed twice and noise is still there and getting worse. VW decided just to blame it on the H & R springs which I couldnt argue with much but now its starting to happen to stock cars?! If you search any R32 forums you will find loads of threads for this exact problem. I mentioned this to vw and they said they had to redesign the springs.
Beware fellow roc owners as i think this is going to become very common

All I can say is im expecting a few visits to VW to have it looked at and pondered. But the good thing is its not affecting the tyre wear at the moment :D but either something has come loose or been knocked out of alignment as the N/S front spring can twist a mm or so. And thats without jacking it up and compresion on the spring. I feel a suspention recall coming on for all Roc's. :eyepop:

Car went into VolksWagen today. I got there at silly o'clock to hand my keys in and go back to bed, when I was told the car has been booked in for a road test with the master technician and he dont start till half 8. Strange, considering the noise is only pressent when stationary at full lock. :? So I waited around for him and true to sods law when he looked at the car it decided not to make any noise. But having succesfully decribed the noise he made the asumption that its the top mount making the click/twang noise. So its having both top mounts replaced with a hope to cure it. But due to silly working hours and the need to use public transport I may not be able to pick it up till friday, so I will report back then.

And just as warning, the master technician said its not the 1st mk3 'Roc or mk5 Golf thats had this problem and by the way he said it, it sounds rather common!!! :eyepop:

The first time I had the top mounts changed the problem was resolved but 20k later it cam back. Vw then claimed to change them both again and problem is still there?! It's driving me mad and I've come to a dead end as Vw are just saying they are unable to diagnose. Any sugestions :?

Got my car back today  And this is what the invoice says they done-:
''Carried out replacement of both front suspension struts top mounts as required''
So lets see how long until it starts making funny noises again. And they said they washed it and it come back even dirtier that when I droped it off  I spent a good couple hours cleaning it before It went in so it wasnt excatly dirty.

Well that didnt last long. Its been 1 day since i got the car back and its making the twang/clicking noise again! Im not impressed and it makes me think they hadnt done any work to it as there are no signs of disturbance under the bonnet around the suspension mounts.

I dont think they did any work to it. There is no signs of disturbance to any of the suspension mounts under the bonnet, unles they can replace the top mounts from underneath.

Does anybody have a picture of the top and bottom of the stock front springs? Im thinkng of getting the spanners out and having a go at sorting out the problem myself.

Although I suspected the same, I think it's unlikely 2 diferant dealers both pulled the same trick under warrenty? I think it is possible to change the top mount bearings from below. I'm goin to try another dealer as it's been to my local one 3 times but I need someone with stock springs to solve it so I can prove it's not the h&r's.
