Re: petrol options?
Have typically been using Shell V-Power but was on holiday in Scottish Highlands and used standard unleaded. Can't say that I noticed a huge amount of difference in terms of performance or mileage, though V-Power/BP Ultimate additives are allegedly better for your engine, but more costly.
While cruising the highlands on a tank full of normal 95-RON unleaded I decided to test what was the maximum MPG I could get out the 2.0 TSI engine. Amazing this was 45.1mpg driving just over 50mph and being gentle on acceleration!
Anyone managed to better 45.1mpg from 2.0 TSI Petrol?

I personally just go to whatever Petrol Station is closer...
I don't pay for fuel so doesn't bother me on price etc.

Re: petrol options?
Right - OK.
So has anyone tried 97+ in a standard 1.4 160?

Mine's been run on nothing but v-power since I had it. I've run all the cars I've had for the last few years on it as i'm convinced it makes a difference.

Re: petrol options?
the reason why i swapped was car was about to be mapped, that said BF made no difference on 95/99 given the timing is set for lower grade, on Revo there is a difference as the dyno plot on 95 setting with V Power in the tank made 10bhp less than when we switched to 97 setting as the timing is adjusted to run on itSeventySix wrote:Hey wigit - did you stick with Tesco 99 in the end?wigit wrote:last two weeks i've switched to tesco 99 to see if there is any difference, jury still out but we'll see later this week
I used to stick it in my previous car (2.0l MX-5 NC) and was convinced it made a difference, but I've noticed that the Roc manual, on the subject of using petrol with an octane rating higher than 95, says 'This does not, however, provide any advantage as regards the fuel consumption or engine output.'

Re: petrol options?
Hi all,
I've noticed a real difference with Shell fuel over Tesco in my 2.0 TSI, so can echo many of the posts already made:
Tesco 95: terrible
Tesco 99: can't remember (been a while, but don't remember a clear performance improvement over Tesco 95, or a particularly smooth ride)
Sainsburys: fine
Shell 95: good
V-power: good (need to try that again next to see if any noticeable benefit over Shell 95)
Obviously there could be variability between different garages of the same brand, and perhaps even different batches of fuel to the same garages, so maybe my conclusions cannot be applied nationwide. However, from experience and from what i've read on this thread alone, I will avoid Tesco fuel altogether now.
What are people's current feelings? I've seen a number of Sciroccos where I live (Bradley Stoke) - where do people go for their fuel? Any experience with Texaco? That's quite convenient for me (short detour to work), and I used to occasionally use their Super Unleaded with my 406 Coupe V6 (can't remember the sexy 'brand' name right now), but I just read that Esso and Texaco use the same fuel and Tesco is twinned with Esso/Exxon. Anyone know if Tesco fuel is different to Esso/Texaco?
Cheers,
Ed

More specifically, I thought there was something wrong with my Roc as it had v.poor torque at v.low engine revs and prone to stalling, particularly when cold. Unfortunately I live in a Tesco town and have to go out of my way to fuel up at Shell. Previously I would get V-Power on trips to my g/f's parent's house (local garage), but the fuel would mostly be used up on the long motorway journey, so I wouldn't get the experience of running V-power in traffic. Out of scientific interest, as there is so much contradictory information out there and most of it pure opinion, I decided to try a whole bunch of fuels:CTRnutter wrote:This has been done to death on the MLR and Scoobynet, Tesco 99 isnt good fuel supermarket fuel isnt in almost all cases, this has been proven by knock sensors which lit up like christmas trees!! Shell V-Power (Optimax) or BP Ultimate seemed to be the best fuels, but the gains over super unleaded were negligible you will not notice gains.

Re: petrol options?
Sainsburys 95 is worst fuel I've used on my sh#tty for the city, mpg is 10% lower, 95 wise I tend to use shell or bp

Re: petrol options?
Thanks for input wigit
I've been adapting my routines to get Shell into the Rocco regularly. I used to only top up half a tank to boost my mpg - save me carrying an extra half tank's weight of fuel around (15kg?), and was not inconvenient as a petrol station is along my commute (but it's Tesco). Now I just put more fuel in at Shell, so there are more (semi) convenient opportunities to tank up with Shell again before I run out.
P.S. I asked for fuel recommendations from Heritage VW Bristol Service manager via email. He didn't reply!
It's clearly a highly controversial subject. I think VW have a deal with Castrol for engine oil, and I guess they've got a similar deal when it comes to fuel (can't remember which brand they recommend in the handbook right now...BP? Shell?).

Re: petrol options?
My 2.0tsi is chipped and I wouldn't dare put anything less than 99 ron in it. But the ECU does adapt to what fuel grade/quality you have put in and will retard the engine timings with cheaper fuels, thus giving you less power as your fuel will not ignite when the piston is at its up-most position, which is what you would need for full power

Re: petrol options?
I currently have both a Mk5 GTI and a 20TSI Scirocco I`m running them both on standard unleaded, don`t seem to have any problems.
However I think I will try them both on 98RON just to see if I can tell/ feel any differences performance wise or smoother running!!
I must say the Scirocco is more economical than the Golf (but it is remapped!!)

Re: petrol options?
Well filled up the Scirocco with Sainsburys Super Umleaded today to see if I could tell any noticeable differences.
Straight away the car seems to be crisper on acceleration and smoother running.
Over the week it will be interesting to see what the mpg is like if indeed there is any change!
