petrol options?

hi all, just wondering what fuel people are using in the 2.0tsi?
i have tried a few like bp ultimate, and tesco 99, so far tesco 99 seems best.

any other comments?

Tesco 99, only on the 3rd tank so far and used it from day one.

Over 8000 miles on the clock,

previously a MKV GTi owner, a car that complained if you put 95 ron unleaded in it. The rocco though runs fine on 95 ron and I have to say that I have tried V power for a few tanks and it seems to make sod all difference in this car.

Still not convinced the rocco is as quick as the GTi but as stated before, the DSG is mapped very differently in this car so could be that reason.

I'm with Sir-rocco on this one - like him previous MkV GTi owner - which only ran on 98+ and I used to use Shell V power. Now my 'roc runs just fine on regular 95. It doesn't like tescos 95 though and deffo prefers Sainsburys! teh mpg can be up to 2 mpg better on Jamie Oliver's juice... I also use Shell 95 which she seems to like a lot too.

I also drive mine a lot of dual carriageways and comfort gives better mpg than normal or sport on the ACC. I am getting into the habit of going sport for the roundabouts and then clicking back on the straights!

As for quckness, I reckon it betters the MkV (comparing manual to manual). the gear ratios are better - 3 and 4 are lower and 6 is much higher... Now that is subjective and I'll bet someone quotes the actual ratios at me and proves me wrong! I will now be a sad git and go look!

I think the gearing seems shorter too, although i haven't driven the MK5 GTi a huge amount. I'm pleasantly suprised with the gearing anyway, it seems spot on, i was expecting it to be longer and not as closely stacked for some reason.


Fuel, i've been running mine on V-power as that's the nearest, can't believe how fuel efficient these things are, i'm averaging 31MPG, which is like some kind of record for me, my last car (renaultsport 197 R27) averaged around 24MPG, i can do the same routes at the same pace (just using the low/mid tourque from the turbo) and get tons more MPG.

went out of my way tthis weekend to try out v power, done a good few miles afterwards and im sure it feels smoother than it did on tesco 99

This has been done to death on the MLR and Scoobynet, Tesco 99 isnt good fuel supermarket fuel isnt in almost all cases, this has been proven by knock sensors which lit up like christmas trees!!

Shell V-Power (Optimax) or BP Ultimate seemed to be the best fuels, but the gains over super unleaded were negligible you will not notice gains. I am a sucker for a good ad campaign too though which is why my car runs on V-power but I have a shell loyalty card

Tesco fuel, even if it is 99, probably hasnt got the additives in it that shell / bp will have ( one situation where additives are better ) so i will be sticking to V power / BP ultimate, since we use a fuel card system anyway it doesnt matter to me, but the MK5 GTI engine ran rough on 95 octane, not sure if this is the case with the 2.0TSI,

is there any performance benefit to the ROC using high octane fuel? i remember they tested the GTI and got 8 extra horsepower out of it on a test rig.

I'd be dubious of an engine gaining that much HP through a 2 octane increase in fuel!! I'd say it would be safer to use 97+ on a turbo engine as for NA I wouldnt worry to much, VW say 95 ron is fine if there was any doubt I'm sure they would stipulate you must fill up with super

I tend to stick with BP Unleaded then once a fortnight or at least once a month I will fill up with BP Ultimate, I avoid using Shell; as around me the Shell petrol stations are notorious for credit card scams/cloning.

Theres a BP near me that offers BP Ultimate 102, but I will give it a go after I get a re-map done.

They definatley did this, it was on 5th gear a couple of years ago, they tested a scooby, a GTI, and a focus, the focus had no benefit, the GTI was +8, the scooby was +14. I had a MKV GTI, and the handbook said 98RON not 95. There was a slight performance boost from using 98 on my GTI, what im asking is, does this same benefit occur on the Roc?

I wouldnt know, but I honestly cant see how it would make a difference maybe its just me even if what the test showed was true I couldnt tell you the difference 8 hp would make

V Power all the way. Plus I use my Shell card which comes in handy. Mrs Addy put Tesco 95RON in Rocco and it sounded like a bag of spanners and went to sleep. It was like I was towing something! Never again!

I know I said Tesco 99 at the start of this thread, used Shell V-power since as it is the same price near me and I don't notice any difference. My cars mapped to run on 97+ though so won't ever put 95 in.

Interesting the number of MK5 GTI to Roc owners here, I am just about to do the same...

I ran and run my GTI on 95 ron.... no major issues other than a coil going @ 45,000 miles.

Hey wigit - did you stick with Tesco 99 in the end?

I used to stick it in my previous car (2.0l MX-5 NC) and was convinced it made a difference, but I've noticed that the Roc manual, on the subject of using petrol with an octane rating higher than 95, says 'This does not, however, provide any advantage as regards the fuel consumption or engine output.'

Maybe the new TSI motor is not as affected by Octane differences than the old TFSI unit which did IMO.
