My Seat Ibiza FR has the exact same thing. Now before anyone shoots me for saying something else besides scirocco I have one on the way.... Maybe it's something common for VW-related products? :p

Question - opinion - 2.0 tsi - optimum choice, good engine from Audi .
1.4 tsi - new product , small engine - complication - new technology, not yet right choice.

VW fans, what is yours opinion.

Bingo :)

Mine is not making any whistling noise yet, just sounds well funky for the moment :D

But if it starts to whistle then maybe this is the answer

Found this on a french site

http://www.forum-auto.com/marques/volks ... tm#t487166" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Apparently VW have a fix for this at last, a Swiss guy at least says his is cured, new water pump apparently

He has a golf I think but it's the same lump as the Scirocco so I guess the same part is to blame

If it's for real then here is the part number :

Exact!

The pump/clutch unit part number is slightly incorrect. "x" at the end means it is exchange unit and there a sub letter missing to the pump number.

Depending on 1.4TSi engine/VW model it is part number is 03C121004Jx, 03C121004Lx or 03C121004Mx.

"J" supposedly is OK - not enough miles yet to confirm fixed, new pump uses the existing part number. :eyepop:
"L" still squeaks,
"M" is for the Golf Plus.

Been under limited "customer" test since just before Christmas. But as above, the clocked up mileage is not far enough on to confirm the fix is absolute.

Planned release was/is February 2010....

DSG versions of the 1.4TSi appear to take longer distance than manual models to reach the dreaded "squeak".

Thanks for the info RW1

I should have translated a bit more, the guy explains that the x at the end is because there are different models depending on the engine code

Mine is not squeaking yet & I have the DSG box,

They may stay quiet longer on the DSG because it tends to change gear very early when you use D most of the time (and if you don't give it the berries everywhere) so the electronic clutch probably gets less use than with the manual box

Thanks. Standby at 5,000 miles (8,000kM) and beyond on the DSG - keep your fingers crossed.

The Supercharger clutch doesn't just engage and thats it. It is switched in/out as the charging boost level requires. Hard acceleration, yes it may be fully engaged all the time. Light cruising, it can switch in and out as the boost level demand changes, even on constant throttle, on for 2 to 3 seconds at a time, then off for a while. A little bit more sophisticated than just a on/off clutch system in a specific rpm range.

Thanks again, now that I didn't know !

I thought the supercharger was just engaged from 0 up to a certain number of revs & then disengaged once the turbo was spun up

Didn't realise it was controlled depending on demand

I've done just over 8000km so far so I guess we shall see :?

Cheers

Which Scirocco are you driving as right says the 1.4TSi is "on order"???

If it is the 1.4TSi, 1,000 miles to the "squeak" point is not unusual. I thought I would have lasted longer as some are reporting when the DSG is on board, ie to around 4,000 - 5,000 miles but....... at 2,290 miles precisely  it was there loud and clear. :( I've noted recently that the volume seems to have gone a little quieter.

I'm not trusting a new pump with modified magnetic clutch being fitted yet as it seems there are reports over in Germany that the new post mod pumps are squeaking fairly soon after fitment and louder! Nothing is clear cut about it at the moment. I still need to report it to the dealer so that any definite fix, so I'm registered in the queue.

What build week is your 1.4Tsi?

The new pump was supposed to be on engines from Wk45/09 but there are indications it only got onto the factory build cars around early January.

Just had my car serviced and reported this noise. Dealer says it is a problem with the water pump and happens at about 3000 revs. New pump on order.
It is a known problem as they had a length explaination from Volkswagen.

yup although do not necessarily expect the new pump to fix it permanently MBP344J as the new pump hasn't been fully tested yet.

Picked up my 1.4TSI manual mid Feb this year, orderd mid Nov 09, traded in for a Roc TDI, so yes its a new build after week 45. Also people are saying it happens at around 3000rpm but mine is doing it as low as 1500rpm?

It will do it at any rpm between 1,200ish upto 3,500ish rpm where the magnetic clutch is generally used. The clutch is "controlled" so it engages for short durations "as required" to maintain the supercharger boosting pressure for the given engine conditions. On accelerations, the engagement is more prolonged. Above 3,500ish rpm the turbo takes over fully.

Replacement appear to have a short period before the noise appears. ie, as low as 1,000 miles.
