Does anyone have an answer of this? My off button 0 keeps the main beam and lower lights on with drl off. On auto the main beam and drl are off with lower lights on. On the third click to the right 'main beam' both the drl and mainn beams are off.

On my 2010 2.0tsi model, the Auto position has the main side beams and lowers drl's on, as does position "0", i.e. no difference.

1 click to the right and only the lower drls are on. Main side beams off.

Another click to the right, sames as first above, but pull the knob out once and the fogs come on. Pull again and twist, the back fogs come on.

Auto, should be auto, what's so complicated? During the day when there is a lot of light, the lights should be off. So why is the main beam on and the drl off.. on auto? & on off '0' the main beam is on with drl off, when everything should be off.

I know, never made sense to me. I just accepted it ;)

Can change in vcds, but never did. It also depends on the driving legislation in your country. Where I am, there is no particular rule, but in Europe there is...

Mmmm, I also have an Audi which has the same switch and that actually works as it should. So why would this be any different? Has something gone wrong in VWs testing?

No, it's because VW tried to do DRLs on the cheap and on cars with halogen headlights they used dipped beam as DRLs and as a consequence the auto light function is really redundant.

On cars with Xenons the auto light function works as you would expect as it does on later cars as they have dedicated DRLs.
