Bluetooth mic got me baffled

Post by dstill »

I've searched for this and cannot find an answer to my problem. Installed a genuine VW bluetooth kit in my mates Scirocco but cant get the mic to pick up any sound. You can hear the caller fine through the speakers but cant hear the driver talking.

There is a lot of stuff on here about the dB level but i've checked this and used different levels both + and - settings. I've checked the coding and it seems fine and also masde sure the mic wires were installed in the connector block at the correct polarity but still can't fathom this out! :?

Sorry if this is stating the obvious, but did you remove the black foam spacer piece from the microphone housing before clipping the mic into place?

Can't rule out a dodgy microphone either - are there any relevant error codes?

Might sound a silly question, but which end of the quadlock harness did you install the mic wires, and have you wired it direct to the Bluetooth module or to the RNS/RCD with pass through?

No worries mate, appreciate the suggestions. I did however take the foam out, i may use the mic in my Scirocco and put it on my mates as i know thats ok. I can't recall any error codes but probably need to do another autoscan.

No mate, not silly, just helpful and i appreciate your help. The harness came already made up so i just plugged it in. The mic go's straight to the bluetooth module which i know is correct as i previosuly had to re-route mine to get voice control activated.

If you can give me some more info about the install, it might help us work out the issue...

Is it for an RNS 510?
If so, does the car have voice control?
If also the case, I assume the mic was pre-installed?

Most current harness/looms come with a passthrough loop so the mic goes into the RNS, then back out to the bluetooth unit through the loom itself.

If you have an RNS 510 and voice control with the mic pre-installed, then the correct set up is usually for the mic to be wired into the RNS end of the quadlock in pins 1 & 7 on the bottom left whilst looking at the quad lock face on (opposite side to the fuse).

The RNS then has an output that goes from it, to the bluetooth unit, so the mic effectively passes through and thats often pre-wired in the harness, but I can't remember which pins off the top of my head.

Some harnesses I've seen even have a set of connectors to allow you to either connect the mic either to the quadlock, or to an additional connection that is direct to the BT unit (but still part of the harness). In the former case and the mic is going into the quadlock, the other connectors have to be bridged to form the output to the BT module.

Difficult to explain without pictures, unfortunately my loom is now well hidden behind the dash :) happy to help though if you can provide more info or close up pics of the loom.

RNS quadlock mic outputs appear to be pins 4 & 9 according to http://www.my-gti.com/529/volkswagen-rn ... ssignments" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Worth checking what you have hooked up to those, unless you are indeed running your mic direct into a different connector as part of the harness direct to the BT module.

Hi dstill,

I am looking to fit the factory bluetooth to my car this weekend, did you follow a guide online? I think I understand most of it but cannot workout where the microphone should go. I was looking to install the module behind the head-unit rather than under the seat.

Thanks.

mwilkins,

Do you mean in terms of running the mic up into the OEM position or A-Pillar, or are you talking about the wiring/pins into the quadlock?

Plenty of guides online around bluetooth installation, I think my-gti.com has one if I recall correctly

Thanks

The car has an RCD 510 so teh mic goes directly to the bluetooth module, i've checked the connections between the bluetooth module and the mic and they seem fine. I tested the mic on my own car and it works fine so it cant be that at fault.

I did an autoscan and it is showing two faults in theTelephone controller, mic open circuit and antenna open circuit, what would you guys suggest doing to resolve this, results of the autoscan are below.

Your coding looks a little strange. Try the following and see if your errors improve. I don't expect this will sort the mic not working though

0200000000010110

Try the above coding and feedback results. Don't forget to clear errors first

Bluetooth mic got me baffled

Post by maq »

The whole mic open circuit thing is a bit odd though. Can you confirm wiring on your quadlock and what pins you're wired the mic into?

You shouldn't have an antenna on the 7p6 if i recall correctly so coding should fix that.

I'm thinking it might be worth tracing the mic through the harness with a multimeter, as if the mic works it's either the BT unit or the harness. I'd be keen to rule the harness out by showing the right pins in the quadlock connect to the right pins on the BT connector.

I'll try the coding change you recommmend as a first step.

I was thinking of carrying out a continuity test on the mic cable so will do that also.

Just to clarify the unit is an RCD510 so doesn't have voice control set up hence the mic cable go's striaght to the bluetooth module and not through the quadlock on the back of the RCD. I have checked the mic cable and it connects to the correct pins on the bluetooth module.

Understand this is an RCD unit, so your wiring the mic into the loom still but via a connector external to the quadlock? If so, continuity test would definitely be the right approach.

Just confused when you say right into the Bluetooth, assume you mean into the loom which in turn connects to the one socket on the Bluetooth box?

Sorry mate, i dont think i explained it too well. The mic wire is wrapped into the loom but go's directly to the connection at the bluetooth module end, it doesn't go to the quadlock at the back of the RCD.

Hi Maq,

I managed to get time to change the code to the one you suggested and still no luck. I did a continuity test on the harness using a simple circuit tester and it seems fine. I have posted the autoscan I did afterwards below, have you any more ideas mate? :grumpy:

I know its a basic/silly question, but you did clear the faults after making the coding changes?

The coding I posted for the 7P6 revision L is bang on as far as I am aware, I've used it myself to remove these errors. I'd double check coding, clear errors and try again.

I'm not sure what to suggest next, although I'd be keen to know what software version is running on the CAN gateway.

I wonder if there is a compatibility issue. I assume you've checked that this unit is compatible with the RCD 510? Will go google now, I wonder what kind of MFD/DIS the car has to?

To be honest I can’t remember if I cleared the fault codes after putting in the new coding and running an autoscan, I’ll clear them and do an autoscan again to make sure.

If I put the new code in and didn’t clear the faults would that prevent the mic from working?

How do you find out what software the CAN gateway is running? It has the highline white MFD.

By the way Maq, I really appreciate all your help.
