Very true Alex.
I know I started this thread but I was simply quoting Autocar, not necessarily my personal views.
I drove only diesels for the past 2 year prior to the Roc, and some of them were brilliant.
I was changing may car every 3-4 months as they were hire cars so got to drive a fair amount including both old and new A4 TDI, a passat, and a couple of other I can't remember now but best of all was the 320d ( sorry for mentioning BMW's again, please don't start swearing at me...)
That 2.0 179BHP Diesel engine is just brilliant.
I liked the new common rail in the new A4 I drove for a few months and thought it was a vast improvement on the old one.
One of my close friends is on his third A8, this one is his first diesel (4.0) and he won’t go back to Petrol.
I actually like diesels very much and may well go back to one at some point, but I don't for one second regret going for the 2.0TSI rather the TDI.

I have to say that as much as I love the car, I don't find it particularly quite.

Really, not trying to be funny or anything but do those figures for the manual transmissions not seem abit optimistic?

Main reason I say that, is because I currently drive an Ibiza Cupra TDI which barring a cotton air filter, strut brace and rear arb is completely standard and is listed at 7.5seconds 0-62.
I have dragged quite a few mk5 Golf GTI's and I can stick right with them until about 100-110, then they just walk away from me.
Now, I'm pretty sure there is no way my cupra could come close to hitting 60 in 6seconds without a remap.

Taking into account driver inconsistancies and consevative listed figures I could understand if my cupra could hit 0 in ~7seconds and the gti 6.5seconds with other factors making up the 0.5second.

The figures for the DSG equipped cars I could believe though.

thats an easy one nearly every scirocco tested on a rolling road comes in about 214 to 218 bhp thats why the lower 0 to 60 than vw claim i think its something to do with hacing an audi ecu but dont quote me on this one http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv92 ... rchips.gif

see sample map before and after print out, i guess you will find fault with too

Ah, VW being conservative with their power figures then. Seems to be the same with seat and probably Audi and Skoda as I know people with the cupra tdi's getting figures over 10bhp higher than the listed bhp.

Not sure what you were trying to get at with your last comment (in bold) though.

Especially as the 2.0tsi doesn't need defence, I'm pretty certain we've all agreed it is a great engine. The Diesel however does seem to be generating alot of hate on here though, which I think only having 140bhp is an issue for it.

Indeed, but what I don't get is, why would they do that?

Does that not mean the new mk6 Golf GTI with the revised 2.0tsi (211bhp with valvelift?) will end up being group 20?

very possibly the the golf gti mk5 is in 17 and the 30th edition is in 18 i think the pirelli is in 18 too, so im guessing the scirocco would have been put into 17 or 18, makes little odds to me @ 45 and a clean licence my insurance is only £218 the advantages of being older, the disadvantage is i cant get in and out of it of the bloody thing.. only joking :D

This thread makes me smile.

Why cant people just accept that differing requirements will define which model people go for. Their is only one model that is the best and thats the one that fits what you want.

I went for a TDi GT and it fits my requirements nicely. I could have had the TSi but it really did not make any sense for the type of driving I do.

The thread reminds me of one a few years ago on the TT Forum where it got really heated between 3.2 V6's and 225bhp Turbos.

I wish the folks who have the 2.0 Tsi all the best in their cars but they really are no better than TDi's or 1.4's as it is the owners requirements that drive the purchase and not usually budget in this price bracket.

My differing requirements have seen me get rid of an 8P S3 with 310bhp.

Each to their own.

I cant be bothered to repeat myself as the whole thread is becoming tiring now, sciroccorocket is only using banter and people are taking the bait! I have also not said a bad word about the diesel variants!

All we both have tried to get accross is we would have prefered the scirocco to have been restricted to a performance model, thats it. Maybe ferrari should start putting diesels in the 430 (extreme example):D

And I disagree the performance of the Tsi is better than the Tdi as the Tdi is better than the Tsi for fuel economy ;)

as ctr pointed out you lot seem to take the bait, right im done fishing, let me say one last thing i do not dislike the 1.4 or diesels ive had many diesels myself but i still think they do not belong in a sports coupe and as for the fact some of you think they are faster well thats just madness, i looked on a gti forum and you dont get people that there 1.4,s and diesels are better and faster than the golf gti so why on here, remember the 2.0tsi is basically a golf gti, thank you and good night
