Evening all,
Hope you are all well. I have a question about the xenon lights fitted on the Scirocco. I decided to take the car into the dealers here in Switzerland where I live. I did this as I was driving a friends car with normal halogen headlights and found that they lit up the right hand side of the road where the street signs are far better than my xenons.
The xenons seemed to shine to low. On checking the forums here about the low xenons I went to the dealer. I explained that the lights ( I Think ) are shining low and perhaps they could be set in tourist mode, as they were not lighting up the signs and markings at the side of the road.
After explaining that the Scirocco headlights do not have the AFS system and only do auto level hook it up to you system and set the correct height of the beam. Anyway an hour later they came back to me and said bad news. The motor that runs the auto level for the right hand side is not functioning. It will not go up.
Now the motor is not available as a separate part and an entire new front headlight unit needs to be fitted. So I have been thinking about getting it replaced.
Anyway when I got home I tested out the lights which they said they had manually adjusted. The lights when you start the car in the dark with the lights on as per normal do their self check. They will dip down and the return to normal position.
Today the dealer called me and said that the motor does not direct the light up as far as it should. Now my knowledge of how auto level lights work should be to keep the lights pointed at lets say zero degrees. As the car accelerates, gets luggage in the back the motors should keep the lights at the zero degree level. In order for this to happen the lens housing should go to minus degrees. The only time i would assume that the lens goes to plus degrees from the zero would perhaps be under heavy braking.
So I have two questions
1) If the lights do their auto check when the car starts and the lights are on and it works ergo the system is working correctly. ( And seems to from my testing ) It is an all or nothing system it either works or does not - is my thinking correct?
2) Is the motor for the auto leveling a replaceable part on its own. From what I can see you just have to disconnect the motor and remove it from its socket. Almost like changing a bulb. If this part is prone to failure why build it into the housing that you have to change the whole headlight unit? - this does not compute in my head.
I have never had issues with these motors on any car previously even the EOS with its AFS. Any information is greatly appreciated. I just feel that people would just rather replace parts that costs CHF 700 excluding labour, madness.
Looking forward to reading your replies.
Thanks for reading my essay and wish a pleasant Monday night.

Re: Xenon - Auto Leveling lights
Just a thought:
The whole light housing can be adjusted. Maybe the housing is pointing so much down, that the auto leveling can not correct it enough.
The motor is part 3DO 941 295 (for 2009 Scirocco)

Hello Bianco
Thanks for the input perhaps what you say could be the case. Could this perhaps be a manufacturing fault oh the housing? I suppose I could ask the dealer to show me a correctly alined/Installed xenon so that I can compare.
Perhaps I will take a photo of the beam shape on a wall and see if anyone can compare it with their own xenon lights.
That could be a plan.
