iPhone help

Post by emmmrose »

Hi guys, I've been searching the Internet for video's or maybe even a walk through on how to connect my iPhone to the Scirocco via the USB cable. I came across this website, and it seems helpful with all the feedback, I haven't found any help though so I thought I'd sign up and ask my own question, so PLEASE HELP!

Ok, so there is a cable to plug your USB cable into, which connects straight to my iPhone, and that seems to connect perfectly, but then on the screen where it says "media in" my music library can't be seen? I don't know whats not working, I've tried it multiple times and it just won't show me any of my music, it's like I don't have my iPhone plugged in at all. Can anybody give me a walk through? Or tell me if I'm doing something wrong?

Thanks,
Em.

You should have a cable going direct from the arm rest straight into the connection point of your iPhone. Don't use the USB connection with your existing PC/Mac cable chained into your phone. Sorry if this sounds patronising as it is the only thing I can think of which might be causing it.

I have exactly the same problem. Just bought R and presumed when I plugged the phone in through the USB it would recognise the music and even charge the phone. Nothing happens, like emmarose says, its like ive not plugged the phone in. When I go to media on the dash it comes up 'media is not recognised'. Any suggestions as its really annoying, please help!

Yes. I'm attaching my phone to the media cable. On the dash it comes up media not recognised. Absolutely nothing happens. It's like I've not even plugged it in apart from the message media not recognised!

which one? the mdi (media interface) to ipod connection or the mdi to usb & apple cable

I need to clarify as the second combination does not work & it would not be the first time someone has tried it (the OP is one such example)

Does anyone know if the iphone Tom Tom app will play instructions via rcd510? Either via mdi or Bluetooth.

Also has anyone come up with decent mounting options using the mdi so I can see the phone for sat nav?

Hi :)

The Tom Tom iPhone app will relay audio via Bluetooth just fine, I use this all the while in my other car and just keep the phone in my pocket.

I find Tom Tom's audio is good enough to not need the screen personally, but I still much prefer the RNS510 navigation so never use it in my Roc.

If you're serious about using the Tom Tom iPhone app in the car, with visuals, you really can't beat the official Tom Tom iPhone holder.. It removes any need to wire into your car audio, as it has a speaker built in, and is perfect for mounting on the window, but you could still bluetooth the audio if you wanted to. I think they are also a lot cheaper than they used to be.

Good to know. Will I need to be listening to the iPhone music for it to work?

I already have the app and the phone, just waiting for the car

No you wont, as long as the bluetooth pairing recognises that your phone supports A2DP, you'll just have to have the RCD on the bluetooth channel. You can however listen to music too and Tom Tom will fade it out when instructions are needed.

If you get no sound, there is a little box on the iPhone when you triple click the home button (a square with an arrow pointing up) which allows you to change the sound output from phone to bluetooth, its as simple as that. For me, this always defaults to the connected BT audio device, so requires no tweaking :)

Hope this helps,

Great. Thanks again. Last question I promise. Will this happen even if I am on the radio or cd on the head unit? I am guessing I am asking too much here. If not will it switch back to iPhone audio?

The one downside with using iPhone's Tom Tom with an A2DP car entertainment system is that it has to be on the A2DP setting to play back the audio (unlike the hands free profile, where it will often cut in)

This basically means that you can't be listening to the Radio or CD/MP3, and have the iPhone cut in with the direction updates, like you could if you had something like the RNS510 with built in navigation.

If silence + navigation audio isnt your thing, I recommend preloading your iphone with some good songs, as the iphone will play back audio and let Tom Tom cut in when directions are to be spoken.

Of course, you could always buy the iPhone Tom Tom cradle and keep your RCD and iPhone completely seperate other than for calls.
