RNS510 power problem

Post by ayeaye »

Posted on vwnavi also but might get a quicker answer here.

I have retrofitted a RNS510 into my MY2010 Scirocco and have what is hopefully something easy to solve.

Firmware 2720 and v7 maps installed.

When the car is running, or ignition turned on, the RNS works fine. However after turning the car off and leaving it for say 30 minutes, I cannot turn the RNS on without having the ignition on. Also it does "system starting" when you go to map, media etc. each time the unit is powered on after being left for any amount of time with the car off.

I have a Fiscon Bluetooth module fitted which sits between the RNS unit and the original wiring.

Has anyone seen this issue before and if so what's the fix - could it be as simple as a loose connection somewhere? I've not yet taken the Fiscon out the loop or checked connections to troubleshoot.

Other than this, unit seems to be working fine.

Cheers

Hi mate there is a power issue with A & B revision RNS510 systems that require an additional adapter when running the latest firmwares. I will dig out a link so you can read in detail

Thanks - it's a version C (LED) so shouldn't be affected by that issue. As far as I'm aware others on here have installed the C units into the Scirocco without any issues.

I've just been out and reseated the connections so just waiting to see if that may have sorted it. Next step if still not working will be to take Fiscon out the loop and see what happens then.

The "System Starting" is normal and always occurs on mine when the unit is "warming up".

In regard to not being able to start without ignition are you sure you have the wiring correct on the rear of the unit as whilst I haven't retrofitted a 510 on other cars where i have fitted units you needed to bypass the power to allow it to run from the battery and not just when the ignition is on ?!

Wiring is standard - removed Fiscon from the equation and no change. Unit will power up if you turn ignition off and turnon RNS unit immediately which indicates power is ok. Our Passat CC works the way I expect.

I think it's the unit that is faulty - the system starting I would agree is normal for maps and but for the media-in function?

May try a firmware update but from what I've read that has to be kicked off without having key in the ignition, so maybe a problem!

Went out to the Passat to de-ice and thought would try its RNS and see what happens - right enough "system starting" appears including when trying to get to media-in. So that's not an issue if all units behave this way.

Just leaves the power issue - the Passat can run the RNS when there's no key in the ignition, yet on the Scirocco it won't do that after the key has been removed for an extended period of time. I don't think I missed anything in the coding so I'm thinking this is a problem with the unit.

Can anyone else who has retrofitted a RNS510 into the Scirocco let me know if theirs works the way I expect it to, and know it does with the Passat CC - turn car off, remove key, lock car, after around half an hour you should be able to unlock the car then turn on the head unit without putting key in the ignition.

Cheers.

Just to close this off (hopefully) and in case anyone in future has a similar query....

It looks like there may be a time period required for the unit to retain enough charge/power to allow it to be powered without the car electronics being active. I got home this evening, about an hour and a half later went out to the car, thought I'd check and lo and behold the unit came on without the key being in the ignition.

So it looks like it's sorted.
