A few questions about the RNS 510

Post by Ryy »

OK, I was hoping u guys could help me with a few questions.

What file system does an SD card need to be in? (Is NTFS fine?) - I am having a problem where it won't read my 8GB card.

Is there anyway to get the damn thing recognising more digits in the postcode on the Nav? - My house has been built since the early 90's, yet I cannot enter in the DVD nav as it won't go that far. (only comes up with XX4 and XX5 instead of running where mine is XX12). I've heard there is an update, not sure.

Also, the DVD that you get, what is it for? Is it for when you go travelling in Europe? I ask this cos I have no idea what it is (I thought it was an update disk) and it states Western Europe on it.

How can I check if it has Bluetooth on it? - I don't really want a dock, but if it's the only way, then meh. It's just annoyuing having a phone symbol on the wheel and on the unit in the middle, but being able to do nothing. JUST DOES NOT MAKE SENSE! GAH!

Finally, what file types does the Video take? I wouldn't mind copying a few things to the HDD to play if I'm in traffic like it was grid-locked the other day, or just in case I'm somewhere waiting for someone etc.

Cheers all!

Sound like a knob, but I'm just a noob.

Thanks agasin.

The postcode issue can be solved by installing the new V7 nav disc, you can't copy any video files onto the HD to play them, as for Bluetooth, is the car new ?, did you pay for Bluetooth ? , the file system I use for SD cards is Fat 32 and I have no issues.
As for the DVD disc, did you install it when you got the car ?( when disc is first put in car you get option to copy the maps onto the HD or to just use the disc), I.e will it let you see maps or use the navigation without the disc in, if yes then the disc is not needed again unless your HD on the Rns gets wiped for some reason

PS did you get a manual with the RNS ?!

Yes I got the manual and have been trying to read through it. The dealer said it didn't play videos, it does. They said the iphone doesn't work with the lead, it does. So I wanted to see any help and advice on here of people who have the system itself.

Bluetooth, I never added anything (not a brand new car), it has the usual "phone" markings, but I guess if there's an option for BT I don't know about it. I haven't tried to search for a new BT device though, so I'll go check that. I did get a DVD disc, will check what type that is (its in the car). If it isn't the latest, can I download it anywhere (I know it's probably out there for a price, which is total BS imo, but still). I will go back to the dealer at some point within the next 2 weeks for something else that they need to put right so if its not V7, I will be pissed to put it blunt.

I think the SD card is NTFS, but will look into it. Is there any sepcific way for file structures??

Sorry to burst your bubble, but if it's not a brand new car then depending how old it is it would have never come with v7 anyway, and they are under no obligation to upgrade your unit to that either..

The v7 maps only hit the dealers this week for ordering.. Leaked versions have been on the internet for a few weeks however.

It's the V5 I have :( - Anyone know the part number for the new disc? There are different versions for the touch / non-touch and different units I take it?

Also, I've read on another forum that the max is 2GB and then others say 32GB. I'm confused here as what I have is an 8GB card and it's FAT32 formatted - so no idea why it won't work.

If a chap were interested in the v7 maps and wanted to have a look at them on the internet (before buying them from the dealer, obviously ), could some kind soul point me in a particular direction (via PM if preferred). Thanks

I would 2nd what Geoff has said. I would rather test them first, also, is there any way to "roll back" to V5 should it be the wrong one?

I would suggest the google search bar (VW V7 maps) would be my first port of call.

Yes, but that throws up hundreds of torrent links most of which are dodgy and/or require payment to join before you get to even check the download is genuine. I was hoping someone could point me to a genuine link.

sorry Geoff, but sites such as those was where I downloaded my V6 mapping a while back. i had no problems, but understand your reticence.

I used Rapid search? Take a look over on VW navi, as members there may be able to point you in the right direction. (I seem to remember that was where i got a steer from)

I found this:

http://poinspect0r.blogspot.com/search/label/version" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Seems you can get the POI onto your Nav. I am a total noob at this, so forgive my idiocy, but I'm confused. I'm pissed also, just over a week ago I had the dealer telling me V5 was the latest etc and now I feel crapped on. I have to go back soon, but there is no chance in hell I'll get V7 from them (already they are giving me £20 petrol costs for having to go back to them). Seriously, feel ripped off on this front. Anyway, I guess sooner or later someone will respond to a PM of mine advising me how to do get V7 and how to put the POI's on. The only reward I can offer are 2x 8GB SD cards... why? Cos my car only seems to take 2GB max. Feel shit on right now!!! lol.

This may inflame you even more when you are clearly angry anyway, but you might get a better response if you calmed down and didn't use bad language. Your posts seem more like a rant than a genuine request for info.

There was nothing there of note that would take my time to get "inflamed". I'm pissed at the dealer, not at this site. All it seems across the VW sites I have looked on is people "acting bad" because they have this and that, and when people ask "Where can I get this", they just respond with more photos to help enlarge their e-penis or something. The whole idea of these forums is to discuss, not boast, which of course is laughable, not angering. There are however a few good people around on here that seem to be working toward something, it's just taking time to actually get a result and quite rightly it's been said that those google results are just a load of spam, cons and probably spy/malware and viruses.

On a side note, DAR is being helpful regarding POI's and hopefully can assist on getting Bluetooth sorted in my roc also.

How old is the car.

Early versions of rns510 only support 4gb non shdc memory cards, later versions can be software upgraded to support upto 32gb shdc memory cards and current version supports such cards out of the box.

I'd guess your car is mid 09 based on having v5 maps?
08 = 4gb limited
09 = 4gb limited pre week 22 / post week 22 shdc with software update / post week 45 sdhc support out of the box.

b0rk, please advise how I can find my build date? Sounds stupid, but seriously, only had it a week.

Also, I spoke to VW and asked to fit Cruise Control how much would it be. The guy stated they tried already and although it's a 59 car, it's a "10 chassis". No idea what the hell that means, but needless to say I was not more informed than before I made the call.

If you let me know, I can advise and dig more into your help! - Thanks!!

Curious if you car was built post wk45 (mid nov) thus making it a MY10.5 car you should have a v6 map disk and SHDC support, if it was built before wk45 then the standard retrofit cruse control kit should work and the satnav will need a software update to enable SHDC memory card support. Which month was the car registered if you don't mind me asking?

The dealer can update the RNS510 firmware btw.

It's a MY2010 car after following http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... 952#p34952" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Does dealer charge for updating firmware? I will ask, but as a general rule of thumb?
