Engine sound comes and goes

Problem : when accelerating the sound of the car goes from sounding like a 2 litre to a 1.2 every half second on and off, sometimes it will sound perfect, sometimes it will constantly sound like a 1.2 but most of the time it is blipping on and off when accelerating, it sounds like there is no exhaust and then there is, every half second on and off and on and off when accelerating. I don’t feel like it is loosing power at all but the sound coming and going can be heard over the radio..

Dec 2015 Scirocco R, absolutely no faults on computer except for exhaust flap which has been modded to stay open to see if that was the problem, it isnt.

Mechanics can’t find the problem also.. could spend a fortune on changing different things but anyone any ideas?

Some of the models have a Soundaktor which generates an artificial engine sound within the cabin. My diesel has it and I know some of the petrol models have it too but I'm not sure if the R has or not. From your description it's the only thing I can think of that would give those symptoms without any obvious performance impact. It could be faulty and cutting in and out.
