Buying a used scirocco!

Post by Prejudic3d »

Hi all,

I’m going to look at a scirocco 2.0 TDI DSG.

What should I look at on a scirocco which can be worn at around the 90k miles mark, the car is from an approved RAC dealer and has had an 82 point inspection before listed for sale. It looks in really good condition from the photos but will be going to view, what should I look out for? And it will be during daylight and I will test drive :).

Thanks all!

Couple of things to check in it's history,

Although the cambelt interval is 140k miles, VW UK recommends it be changed along with the water pump every 5 years. Check if it has been changed.

DSG service intervals are every 40k miles therefore check they have been done on time.

Listen for droning / rumbling from the rear. Sounds like a wheel bearing going but the rear tyres have a tendency to suffer from thread stepping / sawtooth wear.

Check if the emissions fix has been done, although don't worry if it hasn't been done as many people say the performance was poorer after it was done. I took the decision not to get mine done.

Thanks for this reply! I believe the owners were servicing it every 5k-8k miles previously. I’ll ask about the cambelt and water pump, the tyres I believe are new also. It’s my second car ever and it’s my dream to have a scirocco. the dealer has really good reviews and the car looks excellent, how long should I be looking to make it last with good care before lots of issues start to pile on? The emissions fix I have heard of also so will make sure to ask.

Hopefully it will all go as planned and I will be part of the scirocco ownership group!

Just to be clear the 40k DSG service intervals I am referring to are for the oil and filter change specifically for the gearbox as opposed to the normal engine servicing which is typically 10k miles / 12 months whichever occurs first.

If the car has done 90k, it should have been done twice, firstly at around 40k and then at around 80k.

Okay, I’ll definitely ask about that. And if he says he doesn’t know or it hasn’t been done?

In which case it's a risk as the DSG is a complex piece of kit. Just as long as you gonin with your eyes open.
