Traction control and burning smell

Post by The Reaper »

A week ago I heard a kind of squealing and grinding noise from what appeared to be my rear brakes. I took it to a garage and had the discs and pads changed. The next day I noticed when driving around that there was a burning smell and when I quickly touched the discs I found them to be very hot and noticed scuff marks on the disc on the edge nearest the hub. I thought it was just part of the bedding in process and carried on as normally and it went away.
Well yesterday I was coming home and I heard the same squealing sound and grinding sound and have no idea why it's doing it.
I thought about my driving style and as it was driving quite hard that day and traction control was kicking in, I wondered if that had anything to do with it atall.
I am taking it back to the garage as it's obviously not right and wondered what could be causing these issues.

Your advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds as if you have a sticking caliper and the brake is binding. It's extremely common on the rear brakes of VAG cars as they useba single piston / slider arrangement. Sounds as if whoever changed the pads / discs didn't clean / lube the calipers to ensure they operated correctly.

The handbrake doesn't appear to be sticking and when I take the handbrake off the car seems to roll freely as I live on a hill.
I do notice though that when driving at around 20-30mph and I pull the handbrake really hard it will lock on and slide out to the left
