Boy Racers

Post by Withnail »

Since having my Rocco I seem to have become a magnet for idiots who want to race me. Idiots in cars that wouldn't even get a sniff of my tailpipe if I was that way inclined. I don't know whether to laugh or cry but it's beginning to irritate me now. Think I need a photo of Duncan Norvelle with the ' Chase Me ! ' caption on my rear window. That might put them off.

I've noticed this too, I started a thread before about the effect the Scirocco has on BMW (specifically 3 series)drivers, but have noticed other cars which always seem to try and race me. Vauxhall Corsa 1.2's (???) seem particularly prone to this behaviour.

There is one road near where I live on which I always seem to encounter an underpowered older car trying to race me, 1.2 Corsas, basic Fiestas and the like. Why do they do it? If I see a Porsche or Ferrari I accept that trying to race it isn't going to work out too well for me in a diesel VW.

I kept a Ferrari 348 at bay the other day. If he knew how to drive it maybe, it would of been different. It can't have lost so many ponies under the bonnet either.

But yes, in mine I get everything. Mainly Astra VXR's. Mixed results against those. It'd be different if I had an R!

That's because in your R you're already away before you have a chance to notice them! ;D hehehe

If its a young lad in a small engined car, it's probably them just wanting you to show off because they like your car. I tend to do it with super cars etc, you can't beat hearing or seeing one get used in anger lol.

The other theory though is that it's something that's been played with. You'd be surprised with some of these cars and they want to surprise you when they get you to race and they just shoot past in their turbo'd corsa etc.

You can normally tell by the amount of leakage from their zits.

Not the first time it's happened. Yesterday I was driving with my son in the car, in quite slowish traffic on our local A road. Black BMW behind, good gap, in front of me was a skip lorry which I had given a good gap along with several other cars. We were slowing down approaching road works with lights and I noticed a blue Clio overtaking the BMW. He went to pull in behind me then swung back out and overtook. By now everyone was braking for the red light at the roadworks and opposing traffic starting to come through, so Clio idiot got in front of me and had to brake hard to avoid running into the back of the skip lorry. That would have hurt.

He must have been sitting in his Clio dying to pass the Bemmer and then passing the Roc was a bonus.

Can't say I have had anyone wanting to race me away from the lights for a long time, I tend to just ignore anyone doing that kind of thing anyway.

I've not had many try it on with me, I think my car looks faster than it is haha.

I did have a play with a focus RS one day and didn't lose as much ground as I expected.

I usually have idiots in done up corsas or astras trying to get me to race, usually down the bypass nearby where I live. Usually just let them pass but I'll occasionally show them what it can do pulling away sorta thing. I'm only 18 though, it is funny to see their surprise when they see me driving it though! Hate the fact that a lot of them think I'm that type that "has Daddy pay for everything", one thing I dislike about having the rocco!

Had two today and both were old enough to know better. First was a woman in a Mondeo ST with nasty add on drls and a really naff private plate. She tailgated me, then tried to run me off the road, then gave me the finger as I couldn't make my car disappear out of her way. Second was BMW driver who decided he'd beat me away from the lights on a stretch of dual carrigeway that quickly becomes single carrigeway. It didn't work out quite as he'd anticipated so he decided just to pull across on me instead. I had to slam the brakes on or be sideswipped.

Friend had a real old knacker behind her tonight which decided that although she was 'making progress' he would tailgate and flash his lights at her. Quite where he expected her to.disappear to I have no idea.

Must be national nobs in cars day today in the midlands :-(

I've just had a young man in an old Astra try to race me on a local dual carriageway. It didn't end well.

I joined the road and passed a car and a lorry doing 56mph or so in the inside lane, and got my car up to 70 or so, and the Astra was some way behind, but he accelerated and caught me up, and started tailgating me. I wasn't in the mood to have a moron sat on my bumper, and I wasn't in the mood to risk my licence to the extent he was, so I pulled back into the inside lane and let him past. He came past and was grinning like an idiot (presumably, happy that he'd beaten a Scirocco). I could tell that he was having to thrash his car to within a inch of his life though. He pulled away and passed a couple of more cars, when those two cars brake lights lit up suddenly... as the Astra disappeared in a cloud of blue-grey smoke and steam!

He managed to get his car off the road, but I couldn't resist giving him a wave as I came past.

As a prospective Scirocco owner (and current BMW owner) I think you've got to expect this type of behaviour if you want to own/drive nice cars.

I can deal with people wanting to race me etc, it's the idiots who key cars or open there's doors into you that get me!!
