MDI On RCD510 For scirocco

Post by ernst »

I collected my new induim grey Baby Last month. And noticed that I do not have any Usb or Ipod connection in the car. Only Aux-in in the centre console.
I can get a MDI Cable cheeper than buying it directly from vw but need to try and do the installation myself. As far as I can see if I buy the cable Its the cable only, and Im not sure If it's going to work as it almost look like the cables the guys plug in to their centre consoles.
Do I need any other cables as I think I need to plug the cable in directly into the back of the radio and take the cable to my glovebox.
Secondly If this is going to work how do I remove the radio RCD 510 without damaging anyting?

The two cables should have been supplied Free oof Charge with the Scirocco. They are put into the car at the factory. Someone at PDI has not kept them with the car at the dealership.

There's a short multi-pin plug/socket on the inside the armrest pocket on the forward face.

Assuming the OP is in the UK - is MDI standard for all countries (I didn't think it was)?

Correct aye aye its not, Ernst might be in Ireland?
I think anyone who has retrofitted has had VW install it so not sure what is involved in terms of parts etc

As far as I'm aware, all you need to do is buy the MDI cable if you're happy enough to have it in your glovebox (and you'll also need the appropriate cable for USB or iPod connection).
Removing the RCD is straightforward, the plastirc trim around it will pop off easily enough with a trim tool and then it's 4 T20 screws to remove the RCD. Connecting the MDI should just be a case of removing the quadlock from the back of the unit, inserting the MDI cable end into the quadlock (will only go into one place), then refitting quadlock to the unit.

Not sure if there's an easy route to the glovebox from the void behind the unit but if you remove it fully then you should be able to have a good feel around.
