to upgrade or not
I'm due to pcik up a 10 plate TDI 170 in the next week or so and have enquired with the dealer about swapping out the standard stereo for the sat nav /dvd version with HDD couple of questions
Is it worth it - I've got a Tom Tom but like the idea of integrated unit unless the TT will easily fir somewhere?
I assume this upgrade is a single CD unit as opposed to the 6 in the standard can you copy media files to the HDD or is that purely for the sat nav maps and OS
Qouted £850 plus VAT is that a good deal told it was cost but seems high if thats the case?
All views welcome
cheers
Mods - Have I posted this in the right place or is there a better one please feel free to move

I would definitely get an RNS510 but would not pay that ever, you should be able to get a C version for around £500, i do know of a seller if your interested, he will even fit although you can easily do this yourself (although you may need some coding if you have bluetooth/ dynaudio etc.

Sorry if a daft question whats the C version ? Does the nav have speed camera warnings182_blue wrote:I would definitely get an RNS510 but would not pay that ever, you should be able to get a C version for around £500, i do know of a seller if your interested, he will even fit although you can easily do this yourself (although you may need some coding if you have bluetooth/ dynaudio etc.
Not sure if I have the ability or more likely confidence to fit myself can imagine I'd damage something - woulnt I need to change settings anyway isnt this a dealer job? Dont have dynaudio though my phone has BT but presume car need BT prep or something for this to work ?
Re: to upgrade or not
Version C LED is the latest unit - has a LED screen which improves clarity compared to the previous versions.
None of the maps have speed camera warning by default, but people have modified maps with them included (although pretty sure that's not technically legit). The latest firmwares and maps will give you speed limit displayed on major roads.
I thought I would make a hash of changing out the units in my car, but with the right tools and a bit of patience it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to remove the trim, unscrew and unplug the old head unit and install the new one. The difficult bit is getting someone with VAGCOM/VCDS to code it to the car, and it's a 2 minute job to recode although it will work without the coding just you won't get the navigation directions on the MFD (just the spoken instructions).
If you want to use Bluetooth you'll need to get a Bluetooth unit, either the dealer will be able to provide one or one that works well is a Fiscon unit - I've had one fitted and with the latest firmware it works pretty much like the VW factory option, the only thing that doesn't work is voice commands to change functions on the RNS.

Re: to upgrade or not
^ C version is the latest RNS thats all, no RNS officially has speed camera warnings on, as for fitting if you dont have any add on's (all ok except MFD may not show nav directions) its simply a matter of popping the trim of from around the stereo then undoing 4 screws and pull the unit out and undo old harness, you then pop a GPS antenna above the unit just under the top vents and then clip on the wiring harness and push it back in do up the 4 screws and clip the trim back on, as i said though the seller i talk of will fit it for free, if your near me i will do it, as i said its a 10 minute job

Re: to upgrade or not
850 plus vat? Check that the dealer has quoted for RNS510 not the HDD less RNS315... £1020 sounds about right for a 315.

Re: to upgrade or not
I'm sure they said it was the HDD version did say at cost though as you can see above some feel even this is too much
Blue - close by unfortunately why would you want direction on MFD anyway when you have the big screen?
Any ideas what the old unit would be worth if sold?

Re: to upgrade or not
Assuming it's the standard RCD510, going rate seems to be approx £250 - £270 on ebay
