thats 730kg per corner! so 2.8 tonnes all in!!

bit of overkill.... lol

87 or 91 is normal i would have have thought.
Dunno just sharing what continentals tech department said. As xl tyres are generally more expensive if vw didn't feel they were needed for some reason wouldn't they fit cheaper lower load rated ones as stock?

depends on which car i'd say...as to how they think owners will treat it.

the GTI / R cars will all come with XL type tyres i reckon due to the chance of pressure changes within the tyre from the owners driving the cars as they're designed to do.

For the lower hp models, i personally dont think there's a need for XL tyres..if indeed they're to combat pressure changes.

Will check mine to see if its a 91Y XL when the snow has stopped!

ah might be due to the TDI engine then...cos the front 2 tyres will have to cope with the heavier front axle load on the TDI's compared to the Petrol engined cars.

Standard fit tyres will be more about vw can get a good price on than the optimal load index for the car... Buying 10k 97XL's maybe cheaper than 6k 89's, 3k 91 XL's and 1k 97 XL's...

I know my at work place we only buy the highest rated version of a particular component (pop revits) to save overall cost and avoid incorrect fitments.

also, thinking from the German mentality, perhaps they factor in the autobahn's unlimited speed issue and go for the max. spec. under their condition.

by the way, my winters are 94H, whilst the factory summers are 97W ( XL maybe), they should be ok judging by the general slow speed in winter?

Not fitting any to mine. Cannot afford it. To pay someone to do the change either.
