Delphi AC compressor shear plates

Post by flying banana »

Hi,

I'm new here so be gentle :)

We have a 2015 Scirroco R line 2.0 TDI (184) that has the relatively common shear plate issue and no AC. The central bolt is tight but the dished bolts on the pulley that the fingers locate into have completely run out of newness. We jerry-rigged something up on the car to lock them in to prove the compressor still works and it does, so all we need is the shear plate.

Question - there appear to be two types of shear plate for the Delphi DH5 compressor - one that relies on fingers locating into dished bolt heads in the pulley and one that is a true shear plate design with a continuous metal ring with weak points designed to break if the compressor seizes. Are these two types of shear plate interchangeable? Autodoc indicates that both will fit the car (based on registration). Both types have pulleys which are 110mm, 6 rib outside diameter, and 35/55mm bearing diameter.

The finger type seems like an absolutely garbage design that is pretty much guaranteed to fail over time - the ring type seems a more robust design but if it doesnt fit, it doesnt fit :)

My current assumption is that providing the pulley that matches the type of plate is also replaced, they sohuld be interchangeable. Does anyone know definitively? I've added images of the two types below.....

Many thanks in advance.
