Shooms test review

Took delivery of a 2.0 TFSI manual rising blue yesterday... & proper wellied it Here's my initial drive impressions compared against my lowered 306 cabriolet (with a V6 engine).

It took some time to get used to being higher (the rocco is much taller & wider than mine....), parallel parking was interesting until I got used to the length & the girth (oooerrr) & also the wheelbase is longer... the testie I was given had the parking sensors but frankly they are gay & annoying.... the cabin is so HOWGE (at least compared to mine)... there's deffo a feel of space, comfort & quality build.... the touch screen headunit is ace & the SD Card reader / USB input is a smart touch The standard speakers aren't all that compared to my ICE install in the Shoom-mobile but then I wasn't expecting it to be anything like it... I've gone for the 10 speaker 500kw Dynaudio option & read great reviews about the crisp sound & gut churning bass so we shall see...

The pickup fast & the pull is strong... I would say even more so than my V6..... & even above a ton (in 5th.... 6th was a bit slower to respond at that speed... but 5th at just above a ton was 4k revs so plenty left in the rev range).

You get lazy with a V6 & can use any gear more or less.... with this you deffo need to be in the 'right' gear...

It feels very planted, you can throw into corners at speed & although it's much much quieter than mine (very quiet cabin with the windows up actually... even at speed) & although I will miss the burble & parp parp of my exhaust & the roar of the V6 the rocco does have a sweet note to it... especially when booting it lol I managed to get it to wheelspin in 2nd n all

The looks are obviously gorgeous.... & it attracted loads of attention wherever I went & parked up.

In summary.... it'd take a lot to replace the Shooms-mobile but the rocco ticks all the right boxes I could deffo live with it for 4 years for the length of the fleet plan contract.

i thought the sensors were annoying until parking at work where it picks up the individual bollards which are blind to see and shows which zone they are in, I am amazed how much over the shoulder viability you get out the rear windows when reversing

i work in a market town full of flash bentleys, astons etc, amazing a £21K can steel the limelight over the more exotic, just hope they are not muttering c@ck!

The car yesterday was only the test drive... I have to wait until January for delivery of mine... I've gone for candy white, merlin cloth, manual shift, panasunroof & dynaudio

Put mine through its paces, 1500 miles on the clock so thought what the heck took it down some nice quite B-Roads and really went hard on it to see what it really could do on the road, I am going to take it to car limits to see where it gives up in a few weeks. The handling is indeed very good and an improvement over the golf, my only concern is that the car might be trying a little too hard and when it lets go it lets go (if you follow my drift)! pardon the pun

DSG just shines, the best way of getting the car to shift is to put it into manual, and suspesion into Sport, it gives you some control over slowing up and using the gearbox to take some pressure off the brakes, It powers out of bends very well. My only gripe is that there isnt that sense of urgency, because it is so smooth and quite in the cabin it does lose some excitement, but from what I have been told the new CTR has lost that character too so my only comparison is the CTR that I had (2004)!

The brakes do suffer from fade though so watch out for that, I just noticed that the travel on the pedal extended rather than any real stopping issues, but on track I can imagine this would become an issue. The car is loosening up now and its getting better as it does.

CTR consensus in the mags is its a road warrior, all be it did spank a few more powerful weapons in autocar pcoty test, eg ST focus mountune and VXR ring, brakes asside would love to see how if fairs there given the surface and nature of the beast praobably suits it well, i have a feeling most used sciroccos will be thrashed

Reminds me.... the brakes on the testie I drove were FIERCE.... I normally get really annoyed by people constantly touching their brakes but found myself having to.... I think because my 306 cabby is a small car with a big heavy V6 upfront it's easier for me to simply back off the throttle & the weight of the car naturally slows it down quickly, with the rocco I'd ease off the throttle when coming up behind some one but momentum was still carrying me forward until I dabbed the brakes.... I guess like anything it's just getting used to a different car & it's characteristics...

Dont get me wrong, the brakes are very good, but after a workout they seem to hold heat after a succession of tight bends and as a consequence they start to fade, it wasnt so serious as putting my foot down and having nothing there and the discs havent warped, but it was defo there and I reckon with some hard track work that might highlight a problem even more! but it depends on what the car is being used for I should imagine, in my case I will have to change the pads and possibly discs, as I will be tracking my car

the brakes are a vw audi trait in terms of harshness, you get used to it then drive something else and scare yourself

I was meaning the engine rather than the exhaust, Vtec (CTR - S2000) has a tendency to make most things sound quite other than bikes lol Also I'm use to the noise Of EVO's too but its a good thing the Rocco is quiter as it makes for a better cabin when you dont feel like making progress! I'd love to hear what it sounds like with a Milltek on the back as I will be de-catting and fitting one asap as long as it isnt to intrusive

I bought a new CTR when they were first launched. Sold it after 2 months as I could not live with the lag in power below 6500rpm that is characteristic of V-tec. The ride was too hard and the seats were a nightmare.

think you misread my quote, the consensus was scirocco was more of a road warrior than for track use my reply was aimed at CTRnutter, the lag issue i am sure is why Type Rs seem slow is becasuse they are not being driven properly, ie swapping the cogs

Oh yeah

I agree the Scirocco is more of a 'road warrior' which i'm pleased about because it suits me far better. i don't always want to be thrashing about at 8000rpm or to have my spine brocken.

I have the Milltek non res back box on at the moment. It makes a lovely throaty rasp under load but quietens significantly when cruising,in fact its barely audible at steady motorway speeds but develops alovely growl between 3-4000 as you boot it. Definitely not your "halfords boy racer" type permanent drone.
Downpipe and cat going on and a custom rolling road remap being added within the next week or two so should enhance the sound some more

LOL so what I was told is true then, good job I opted for the Rocco as after the 2004 CTR I'd feel like I was down grading, if i'd bought the new one!!

Excellent, I'd be grateful if you could let me know how you get on, are you going to opt for a CAI at all? I'm hoping that GruppEm release something soon similar to the airbox they created for the GTi and R32

Will keep you all posted as I will have before and after dyno plots etc. I know Carbonio did a CAI for the MKV Golf and may well go for one of those along with a forge diverter valve. Depends if an R version is advertised as being offered as if it comes out I will be trading up and save my cash to fund mods on that beast.
