Scirocco 100K

Post by 2207 »

Morning,

My Scirocco has just hit 100K, I'm due a service but I'm not sure if it's worth getting a major done or not? Last service was 70K and that was a minor, anything that I really need to be aware of? Car runs fine and it's an 59 1.4 TSI 160

thanks !

Better question is if you want to save money: can you do some maintenance yourself and not is it really needed?
And if you are skipping it making the interval twice as long.
The maintenance is written down in your manual/service plan, read it...

VW recommend a minor service every 10k, as you've done 30k between services its probably best you go for the major eh.

Perhaps you should read the service book whilst you wait for the work to be done

Real difference between a major and minor on this car:

Minor:
-Oil change (£30)
-Oil filter (£10)

That's it.

Major:
-Oil Change (£30)
-Oil Filter (£10)
-Air Filter (£10)
-Spark Plugs (£40)

Air filter is good for 50,000 miles on this engine. Sparks 40,000 - Although I would always inspect and gap measure them at 20,000

It is crucial the correct sparks are fitted on this engine, VW - 03C905601B or NGK SIZFR6B8EG
No other sparks should be fitted - or risk the chance of misfire, which on this engine can be piston death.

The whole major vs minor service is a massive con at VW dealers. The majority of the checks done on the major service are done as part of the MOT so I tend to just always get a minor service done and then add items such as pollen filter, air filter, brakecfluid and fuel filter (diesel) based on time / mileage it was last done. No way the car needs a major service every 20k / 24 months as VW dealers say after 3 years.

A lot of good points here, I often get asked that my car is due a 'Major Service' but always decline in favour of the minor one. As I do such little mileage (about 2,500 a year) I don't see the point. That said, my car is an 09 plate and I have never had new spark plugs - mileage on 27K. I have agreed to getting them replaced at next service, but is it worth it given the mileage? VW would argue on the age of the plugs (8 years old) which could be a fair point, do spark plugs deteriorate with age as opposed to mileage?

Yeah i always thought that was too long. VW have just been increasing the length of time on the air filter for the past 10 years. My 2005 golf mk5 TDI with the exact same filter part number said 10,000 miles in the service book.

Having just look it up, My 2010 1.4 TSI service manual actually says 60,000 miles or 6 years.
Basically check it at every service, if its black - change it, otherwise blow out any larger debris and put it back in. Or just change it every 20,000 miles since the thing only costs a tenner.

It's almost as if they make this $hit up as they go along! :D and yes dealer services are the biggest con going, as pointed out above nearly all the checks they do is what a good MOT would do anyway.

You can get an air filer from a motor factors for about £5! Are dealers overpriced, yes. But if home servicing a car no point on shipping out cheap easy to do bits.
