VW want £419 for front discs and pads fitted

Post by 3t3p »

They actuuaaaally originally quoted £249 and I said is that right?! (He checked and realised he was wrong (doh!)

He said its more like £480 but would do £419 fitted! seems a lot either way.

Now looking at sourcing parts by self and getting an indie to fit.

Front discs are 345mm, looking at pagid, brembo, bosch, ferodo any pros and cons here for a standard non-vented/grooved disc?

OEM pads and discs are Pagid I believe. Does anyone know the dimensions of the pads I want?

And am I correct in saying that eurocarparts sell discs SINGLY?

* just read pads are sold as a set and discs individually on euro carparts. they have a payday sale on atm and can get a pagid set of everything I need for £164.23!
Pagid Brake Pad (Front)Product Code : 101441168
Pagid Brake Disc (Front)Product Code : 104441248

Is that right?
Reply quick!:D

I would fit the Audi TTS 340mm discs.
They are better than the 345mm ones (same as R32).
They weigh 1KG less (quite a lot) and are cooled better as they have cooling vanes both externally and internally towards the hub. They fit exactly the same. It's a little known about OEM upgrade that some of the more switched on R32/S3/R owners use.

It is correct they usually sell discs individually.

I'd be careful buying pads from there as sometimes there is a couple of different pad types and you don't always get the best one.
Best bet is to buy in store and take out one of your old pads to ensure they are the same.

I would expect front discs to come in around £130 for the pair (Audi TTS)
Front Pads around 60.. depends whether you want motor factor cheap or higher end..

Rear discs around £80 for the pair and rear pads around £40.

Hi taking out my pads isn't an option or I'd just fit everything myself.

What do you mean about different pad types?

Good source for TTS discs?

Then supply discs to an independant dealer and have them do it.

Sometimes ECP list 2 or 3 pad types for one car (different shaped backing plate) when often only 1 will work.
Same case for the rear. Sometimes pads only come as pads without the clips on the back of the pads, you may need to get it seperately.

Look online for Audi TTS discs....Ebay..Mtec...Ebc..... or find them on ECP website?

I think the easiest thing for you to do is buy the discs yourself (as these are easy to find) and take it to a garage and have them supply the pads.
That way it's not your issue. A decent independent won't charge you more than retail on the parts anyway.

Yeh was thinking discs only might be way to go.

If an indie sources pads will they always be OEM or can they be worse than OEM?!

TTS discs are smaller, are they a drop in replacement? Will saving 1kg really make any sort of difference?

You can ask for OEM, cheap ones or better ones (for example EBC Green/Yellow..Mintex M1144...Ferodo DS2500..etc).

Yes, the TTS discs are 5mm smaller. If you look at your disc you will probably notice the lip around the edge of the disc...this is because the pads don't contact this piece of surface anyway.. you are not losing any effective brake disc..

1KG of unsprung weight is quite a bit. Considering how heavy the OEM brakes are. It's a no-cost upgrade (as in they don't really cost much more than normal 345mm discs) there is no reason not to use TTS discs.

I explained in my previous post that the Audi TTS discs are a straight swap..

Yeh there is a lip on the current discs.

I've considered after market pads before for progressive braking feel bit am terrified of a daily squealer do not want that!

What about these?
https://www.gsfcarparts.com/601vg0810

If they're right and I go for them, what pad do I want, ones for the stock car i.e 345mm pads or a 340mm TTS type pad?

Also will it pass MOT if the brake pad is on the edge of the disc.

Thanks, noob here

The pads used are the same...tts r32 scirocco / golf r caliper all the same... just tts uses 340mm discs.
Same setup is used on new mk7 clubsport.

The mot is not an issue...

The discs look ok...altho you can get them for cheaper from mtec..i have j hook ones with black coating.

Cool thanks had a search for Mtech and not sure which site you'd be referring to as a few firms by that name.

I wonder if the garage will think I'm mental turning up with the smaller discs haha.

Worried j hooked discs are noisy and eat pads. Hell as it is my front wheels go from nought to covered in brake dust in five mins!

Thanks. Mtech only do drilled, grooved, c-hook, I want plain discs I think really.

Only other source is gsf then or eBay, these discs are hard to find.

Aside from weight the TTS discs cool themselves a but better, how would I notice this on the road?

Is fade a relationship between disc and pad or lies mainly with the pads?

I mentioned TTS discs and they didn't comment on it at all?! So gave up with the idea and got 345mm discs.

Will I be ok on brembo pads? I told them I don't want squeeling!

They had Zimmerman and pagid for sale. Pagid were painted hubs but 330 fitted. So went brembo discs which are higher carbon content and have a dark grey coating apparently on the hubs

Also met with Hassan and he gave me a quote for WALK and a whiteline rear ARB, thinking of trying these light handling mods and if I don't like them can return car to stock

I'll send them an email asking them again. VAG technik in Eccles have quoted £240 for OE equipment fitted. Enquired what parts they will use as that's a decent price!

OE stands for original equipment so they will be original equipment equivalent pads... EG pagid.

There is not really much of a difference. Most OE type pads are silent.. you only get squealing due to lack of lubrication on the sliding pins or/and aggressive pad/disc combinations. EG racing pads.
