Scirocco R - Worth it?

Hi all hoping to get some opinions on this Scirocco R and likely costs involved in the future should I go ahead and purchase.

The car is in very good condition inside and out. However the rear tyres were a little cracked as shown on the MOT as an advisory.

The cam belt and water pump haven't been changed yet but the car has been serviced regularly and the belt has been inspected each time.
Is this likely to be a ticking time bomb? Would it be worth changing sooner rather than later as I know it should be changed at 40k or 4 years?

The only other things putting me off are just absent features. The mirrors not folding automatically and the lack of parking sensors. Although I'd prefer a camera anyway.

Both these are possible upgrades in the future but costly ones at that. A quote from a local garage to install an OEM reversing camera came back at an eye watering £560+ VAT

With that in mind I can see the first year being expensive when considering the insurance also.

What are your opinions on this car?

Cambelt is 120k miles or 4 years, if registered before Sep 2009 and 5 years if registered after Sep 2009.

The time limit is a VW UK recommendation whereas the factory and the service booklet only advise only the mileage limit.

Just negotiate £500 off the price to cover getting it done.

Mirrors don't fold automatically on any Scirocco. Some people have managed to update the controllers to add the function.

Parking sensors can be easily retrofitted much cheaper than the quote you have for the reversing camera.

Looks as though it's sold now.

I bought mine with 37k miles now 40 without a cam belt change, it's 2011 so I plan on doing it soon, also just got the dsg oil changed

Thanks for the info Cuprabob. I meant electrically folding mirrors as the ones on this car are only adjustable electrically.

If I do end up getting it I'll will be reading the guides on here as I've seen there are quite a few.

Realistically what MPG can be expected with the R? And how much does it differ from the GT?

I ask as my girlfriend will also be using the car and is worried it will cost much more in fuel.

I've looked at the mpg figures stated on various review website but they tend to be the official figures.

According to Honest John, Scirocco R will be in the region of 24-27mpg, these figures are usually pretty accurate too, as i get pretty much bang on 33 in my 2.0 TSi

I do 70 miles a day and on the motorway at around 70-80 I get around 32mpg, it's pretty good on fuel, full tank I get around 320 miles did get 350 once

Don't buy an R if mpg is on your mind.. then again.. anything between 25 and 30 is good imo

Call me mad but my girlfriend will be the one using it during the week commuting to work. She's managed not to wreck her car all the years she's had it but there's a first for everything

I'm not fussed about the lower MPG as no matter which scirocco I get it will inevitably cost more in road tax, fuel and insurance.

Bit of an update since i last posted here

My Girlfriend is a bit put off by the fact the Scirocco needs the Cam-belt, Water pump and two new tyres within the first few months of ownership. That and the £265 annual road tax. So shes been in her mates SEAT Ibiza SE or something and quite likes that.

Now I've started looking at the SEAT Ibiza Cupra Black. Pretty decent looking car but not as nice as the Scirocco R.

All in all a brand new ICB would set me back £15515 OTR with a years roadtax included but £145 after that.

The Scirocco R needs
Two rear tyres ( Advisory for cracking) £240
Cam Belt + Pump £459 (@Main dealer, probably go elsewhere)
will possibly need Front and rear brakes soon so thats another £250?
On top of that, retrofitting a rear parking camera would cost around £560 (Thats a local specialist, would likely fit it myself given the guides here are spot on)

Probably a bit of a daft question to ask on a scirocco forum but which would you pick?


A shiny new Cupra will all the bells and whistles and hopefully no big expenses *

OR

2010 Scirocco R that needs a bit more attention and an asking price just shy of £14k
*Biggest expense probably being the depreciation. GFV of £7500 on SEATs finance calculator

Both cars would be a cash purchase/bank loan not PCP.

better spec than the one you were looking at, and at least owned by a forum member who's never spared a penny looking after the car.

The gfv will be slightly lower than .. the intent is that you have a bit of equity to use as a deposit on your next car. I'd go for the Scirocco R.. 14k is cheap and once you have done the cambelt and water pump it's done for another 5yrs. As for brakes.. if you keep a car for a a few years you will most likely have to replace them at some point. As above.. I'd look for a forum owned car

Haha it does sound a bit like I have a thumb shaped bald patch on my head. But to be fair. We would be getting rid of her car and she would be the one commuting in it whereas I'd get to enjoy it at the weekends.
The shiney new car appeal is the fact it shouldn't need expensive parts anytime soon but that's outweighed by the depreciation it would suffer.

The scirocco R mentioned in my first post is still for sale and is a genuine sale, though it would be nice getting one that I knew every little detail about by looking on the posts made here.

I do like the look of the one for sale here but I've fallen for the White body black wheels.

Don't get a white one, everyone has white. Seriously, keep your eye out on the road and you will surely count 9 white scirocco's to any other colour you might see. Get that blue one. Blue is nice.

Wheel colour is, I would say, a non consideration. They're easy to repaint in a couple of hours or if you can't be bothered to do it yourself, will cost maybe £200 to get done professionally. Or better, as I don't like any of the offerings on the Scirocco, get a set of decent aftermarket wheels. You'll gain handling benefits too as the OEM wheels weigh an effing ton. My 19" Talladega's were just shy of 14kg per corner!!!
