Not a clue sorry blower! But basically it's 2 and a half grand and Volkswagen won't give me the time of day, luckily I have a friend who works in the business of reconditioned engines, so I'll put one of those in, drive it until the warranty has 3 months on the engine and then sell the car, I'm gutted because I love the car, but I could never justify buying another scirocco after this one... Time to move on to something more robust I think...

Update on mine, warranty company are sending an engineer out to inspect my engine, guessing they're going to see how far their liability extends, my mechanic has said with all the parts that need to be replaced on a rebuild, it will be 2k plus VAT - hoping the warranty company do he right thing. But not too hopeful.

Good luck
Actually they charge about £500 to pull the cylinder head and diagnose failure. He was quoting £115 an hour and that job takes 4-5 hours.
Get them to do it and reclaim the money back.. They tried to scare me with "we have to drop the gearbox for diagnosis and this might cost you £400" when I had my clutch moo... I told them do it, and I can still prove it's not wear and tear.

More news! i've been advised by a friend (also experienced mechanic) to drive the car as little as possible when i get it back, as it's very possible debris of the knackered parts and scored barrel could end up in the turbo... i'm just curious if anyone has heard of this before? it obviously makes sense and the broken parts go somewhere.. but i was hoping to get another few months out of the roc, but not sure the risk of a turbo going is worth it? cheers

Well if the piston is cracked, then it must be misfiring a lot....under these conditions the following can happen if you continue to drive it:

-Catalyst death from unburnt fuel causing it to overheat
-Piston could begin to break up, resulting in metal debris getting into the oil, this oil feeds the turbo so could bust it
-Fuel will also be leaking into the oil (via the cracked piston), this again could kill the turbo.

My piston has a hairline crack so no debris as yet, slightly worried about the catalyst being damaged due to mis firing, the mis fires error lights only came on once in a while so I'm hoping it wasn't mis firing enough to break anything else I the engine. VW should step in with these issues really, mines out of VW warranty but at 25k having a 2.5k engine rebuild isn't acceptable quality. Hopefully once this is all done nothing else goes wrong and finally get some haste free ownership

Okay, so the turbo turns out to be okay, so I'm thinking I'll drive the car while it still has an engine warranty on it as the new engine comes with a years warranty... If the cat has busted I'm going to sell my custom back box, put back on my miltek and put a decat pipe on it..
