CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
Well.... not to scare anyone but i thought i'd just tell everyone my story about the 18 months of owning a scirocco... i'd firstly like to say i love my scirocco... but what an absolute bag of rubbish.. no offence to any other owners, just talking about my own car!! bought the car last july, and fell in love instantly, i bought the 1.4 TSI twincharger with 42,000 miles.. i was so happy with the car, it was everything i wanted and more... roll on september, the problems began.. first thing to go was a set of plugs.. not too bad, but also not what you'd expect after owning a car for 3 months.. all went smoothly then until the following may... when the chain tensioner on the timing chain completely gave up... so thankfully i had someone on the inside at VW and it only cost me 400 pound instead of 1600.. lucky escape from a very annoying situation.. so i thought to myself, great, clean bill of health itll be good for another 20k.. oh how wrong i was October rolls on and yet another lovely suprise.. the supercharger clutch and water pump unit give up 60 miles away from home.. what a drive that was in limp home mode...again another 350 quid done on the side by someone at VW... at this point i'd given up on it and went to audi to buy a new A3.. long story short, no deal so still driving the scirocco.. And here we are today.. 18 months after buying the car, i get in it after work this evening and im greeted with an engine management light, and the infamous... think its time to get rid of my bag of nails and get something a little cheaper to keep on the road.. gutted because i love the scirocco but i dont think i get bring myself to get another one after this..

Re: CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
sorry to hear it, i've been there, had a black 2.0 gt before my r that was in the garage 14 times in the space of a year. my list was:
rear shock replacement
rear wing re-welded to chassis (wasn't the shock)
new clutch after it began mooing like a cow
new steering wheel ignition barrel (windows kept juddering)
horn didn't work when vw sold it to me (mot fail and illegal!)
various bulbs blew
new air intake manifold
trim fell off randomly
petrol flap wouldn't open - great when you drive to belgium and can't put fuel in and get stuck...!
after losing a bunch of money taking time off work to drop off / pick up (didn't have one courtesy car the whole time) i realised it had to go. the r's not put a foot wrong though...
if anyone's driving MF09 LVV i feel sorry for you...

Re: CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry to hear you had so much trouble!
Pre-2011 1.4 TSI 160ps engines did have numerous problems, and you have listed nearly all of them!
I would bet that it wasn't the timing chain tensioner that failed - but the camshaft adjuster was sticking causing a noise that sounds just like a failing chain tensioner and associated chain rattle on startup.
Regardless though VW replace the chain tensioner, chain and camshaft adjuster when a car comes in with that complaint as they are not skilled enough to tell the difference and their TSB says to replace the lot.
The camshaft adjuster was revised mid 2010 to solve this issue.
The supercharger clutch/water pump was also revised mid 2010 due to clutch material problems.
The plugs were also revised multiple times and if you were running original plugs they caused all sorts of problems (misfires / poor running)
So I am betting your car is a 2009 or 2010....let us know what come of the latest engine management light saga :|

Re: CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
Thank god i have 2 year warranty on the 29,000 Miles 2009 1.4 TSi i have just bought from VW.
I know from the service book it had new spark plugs last August.
I also leave the car out of gear when i park it as its a manual gearbox.
I will continue to look for more tips for the 2009 1.4 TSi.
I cannot believe the condition of the bodywork, its totally mint apart from a very very small mark on 1 front wing.
These cars must have a good layer of paint, my 2009 honda civic in black only had to brush against anything to get a scratch.

Oh dear, this worries me. Just put a hold deposit down (can get it back if things fall through or i decide i dont want it by next week) Placed the deposit on a 2.0L GT Petrol/manual 2012 Roc hope as its slightly newer the problems are cured.

Re: CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
Although the 2.0 is not immune to issues, they are not as widespread or as severe than those experienced with the 1.4 twincharger engine, so I wouldn't worry too much.Quinnaay wrote:Oh dear, this worries me. Re: CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
I have had a few problems with mine also 2008 2.0 GT, luckily most of the work was done on warranty
1st: Timing chain tensioner was rattling (2 month argument with vw to sort but got there in the end)
2nd: intake manifold threw an engine management (vw sorted no hesitation)
3rd: clutch "Mowing like a cow" which was a leaking slave cylinder labour and slave cylinder free but clutch cost me £400
4th: ignition barrel (windows going mad and couldn't get key in ignition vw sorted)
5th: coil pack went after remap (understandable £80 set from awesome gti)
6th: rear washer pipe split (quoted me £550 told them to bugger off)
7th: Fuel flap sometimes gets jammed (haven't bothered to do anything yet)

Re: CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry to hear you have had such a bad experience .
But this engine is known to have many problems. And that's why I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Would never buy one knowing it's prone to a lot of problems

Re: CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
My engine is in pieces now trying find out what's wrong (mis fires) has valve issues and cracked piston - now to argue wear and tear with the warranty company on a car with Fsh and 25k miles getting a cracked piston. Living the dream! Cannot believe VW take no ownership of these common faults, I tweeted them and they said they only consider any good will of problem diagnosed by VW retailer (£115 an hour / cheers but no) I said was well documented they just shrugged it off. This coupled with the dsg clutch going at 14k miles and them stitching me up with only parts good will (1200bill in the end for something that xl shouldn't have broken) has left a bad taste in my mouth for VW. Here's hoping warranty company do the right thing and no more issues after she is back together. VW are shocking at customer service though.

Re: CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
So you have a £25k+ car but won't spend £115 to get a complete diagnosis that VW will recognise. Not sure that is smart you can always make a claim for that money back afterwards? Sounds like it would be helpful documentation for a small claims court filing.
Good luck

Actually they charge about £500 to pull the cylinder head and diagnose failure. He was quoting £115 an hour and that job takes 4-5 hours.char wrote:So you have a £25k+ car but won't spend £115 to get a complete diagnosis that VW will recognise. Out of curiosity, do you know the month/week of manufacture of the car? I'm curious to see what revision of injectors you had....

Re: CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
For the clutch pack was inschape - that's how I know they stitched me up last time and only offered 50% parts good will, labour was down to me, and at 115 an hour it wasn't cheap. Clutch shouldn't go at 14k. - my car is at an indie garage I trust and used for years with other cars, as I know VW would have of course found the same problem, but as car is out of manufacturer warranty likely do a parts good will, and on this size job wasn't prepared to pay their labour costs as once my engine is apart they've got me over a barrel.easyrider wrote:which dealer did you use? inchcape?greg7728 wrote:My engine is in pieces now trying find out what's wrong (mis fires) has valve issues and cracked piston - now to argue wear and tear with the warranty company on a car with Fsh and 25k miles getting a cracked piston. Re: CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, as blower rightly pointed out its 115 an hour for diagnostics, plus parts and then putting it back together, last time my car went to VW they scratched all down the drivers side (which they then had to pay to put right) so I wouldn't trust them with my car, garage I am using have used for 10 years with other cars. Making a claim back for a touch under 2grand will take forever - and I don't have 2k sitting around spare I'd care to give VW in the interim, all this while I'm without a car, car has such low miles and fsh shouldn't have to have major engine components replaced at such low miles. I'll go trading standards with all my receipts when I have my car back and fixed.char wrote:So you have a £25k+ car but won't spend £115 to get a complete diagnosis that VW will recognise. Re: CAR FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!
Sounds like a lot of bad luck tbh, real shame. I bought my 1.4 tsi with 36000 on it, not had to do a single thing except replace a couple tyres after one got a puncture. I've only had it a year though so maybe the issues are yet to come.
