Do all DSG boxes come with steerwheel paddles?

Post by ballisma »

Hi Guys

I'm definitely after a 2.0 DSG petrol, but no one seems to mention the steering wheel paddles anywhere...
Do they come as standard with the DSG box?

Cheers

As long as you have a multifunction steering wheel, you have the paddles. If you are going for the 2.0TSI, you will have a GT version (for UK orders only) which is sure to have the paddles.

2.0 petrol DSG will definitely have them.

They sit about two inches in from the back of the wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions.

Left changes down, right changes up.

From your seat you'll just see a little + and - 'tab' above the wheel spoke.

I can go out and take a photo if you like.

I use it about half the time.

Doddling along in traffic I use the regular D option on the box. Then when I want to drive in a bit more spirited fashion I flick it over to the paddle shift. But also if you just suddenly decide you want to drop a couple of gears and go you can pull the down shift paddle and it will flick itself over to paddle shift unless you use one again in 5 seconds or so.

I went out to tesco this morning. No traffic about so I used paddleshift the whole way there and back. You get a lovely exhaust pop on the upshifts too :)

Could you explain this again please Kev? Do you mean when in D mode you can drop down a gear by pressing the - paddle? What do you mean by the 'unless you use one again in 5 seconds or so' ??

Thanks

When in D mode, pulling one of the paddles will flick the system over into 'manual paddle mode'. If you don't use one of the paddles for about 5 seconds it will revert back to full auto.

This means that if you spot an overtaking chance for instance, you don't have to waste time flicking the box lever across and then changing down, you can just override it with the paddles. Your other option is just to plant your right foot and it'll effectively kickdown like old auto boxes do but I find that very slightly slow witted.

And if you want it to go back to D instead of waiting you can hold the right paddle in for a couple of seconds.

170TDI comes in GT only, so it wil have the multifunction steering wheel and hence the paddles also. A non-GT 140TDI would not have the paddles unless the multi-function steering wheel was added as an option.
