Sure, it's not the compartment under the light switch as it can.move about a bit when closed?

I've got a similar rattle when around 1500rpm coming from somewhere round the top of the dash on the passenger side. Annoying aren't they

Shaun,
Whilst I'm sure you will have already covered this possibility, I'll send this post anyway....
The only time I have had a rattle in the front of my TDi was around 1500 rpm - in gear driving and in neutral stationery - and it was cured by wedging a bit of foam under the bonnet stay rod.
Good hunting !

I might give that a try thanks mate even though mines only when moving, definitely worth a shot until I fit some struts under there.
Thanks

Yep I have that. Comes and goes on long trips. Mine sounds like its coming from the airvent or the A-pole. Driving me insane but thankfully it goes away after a while.
I have a similar sound coming from the passanger side now and then.

I have had a few rattles randomly coming from the dash/vent areas. Found that if i blast the heater for 20 seconds it seems to cure it...

Try opening the bonnet and look at small triangular area with a perforated base just under the edge of the windscreen- I had a problem with a bit of debris caught there that vibrated at certain speeds

Re: rattle near air vent drivers side .. i think
As soon as I commented on this thread the windscreen rattle started haha! Strange... But looks like its the plastic triangle bit just need to put something under it. What did you use to stop it? Where exactly did you put it? Could you post a picture?
Thanks

my debris problem was a beech nut off the tree outside the house, suspect some malicious squirrel put it there
