Thinking of coming back!
Throwing a few things in the mix at the moment but looking at the prices for a decent R I have to say I'm very tempted to return to the fold.
Other things like an S3 or the new GTI 7 are making the decision a difficult one.
Choices choices.......

Re: Thinking of coming back!
we are on the same boat...
The S3 is very prestigious and fast, but lack of "soul" - on the other hand, the new S3 is going to be something else.
About the new mk7 gti - it seems like all round good hot hatch, but i personally don't fancy how it look.

How come? Hard choice tbh. I was looking at an s3 before I got my roc but £2500 insurance and £400 tax was enough for me to say no to that. S3 is a great little car.

Re: Thinking of coming back!
I sold my Roc to buy a Disco 3 which I have to say despite their reputation as a money pit has not put a foot wrong. A 300 mile drive feels like you've just popped to the shops and it was fun earlier in the year when the white stuff left most cars stranded. It averages just under 30mpg which isn't too bad for a 3 tonne vehicle and given the amount of space I've never got to worry how much the Mrs packs for a weekend away.
To cut a long story short we're moving house soon and with the Disco and my work van I'll be struggling for space, basically it will involve widening the driveway and replacing an up and over garage door with a roller door in the hope I can fit the Disco in the garage. Plan B is replace the Disco with something a little more garage friendly and I'd quite like to get back into something petrol with a decent turn of speed should that be the only option.

Harsh we still have you after you swanning off to the other side of the world & leaving your poor roc in a cold scottish garageteejay212 wrote:Ian,

Of course we'll have Ian back, he barely went away, (& the detailing & cleaning section has been a little quiet without his ocd ness )
Re: Thinking of coming back!
It was a toss-up between an S3 and the R for me.. running costs would have meant the S3 was actually cheaper to insure and probably about the same in fuel
Although the S3 was undoubtedly the superior car, 4WD etc, coming from a Golf it was too much of the same thing and there just was a lack of "soul" as someone above mentioned. Arguble but it didn't really stand out from other A3's.
I spent months procrastinating but In the end I plumped for the rocco, so far I am not disappointed

Re: Thinking of coming back!
With our road tax and insurance rates here, the scirocco is unusually affordable to drive- its a pity VW don't break from tradition and do a diesel Golf GTI with otherwise identical spec and looks to the petrol GTI. It'll will be a while before we get another model so visually different to the standard Golf as the MarkV was, reminiscent of the visual difference of the Mark1.
You do have to make sacrifices with the s Scirocco, especially if you intend to carry large objects- the boot opening is very small compared to the Golf. I recently measured the opening as I intended to buy a large item (compost bin) in hardware store, and hadn't a hope if fitting it in. Very disappointed to see car in front in the car park, an old Peugeot 206, easily fit the same object.
So you do have to make sacrifices. But worth it for the unique car that scirocco is. Who else gives you sport seats in the back. Audi obviously a great car too, but don't they look dated?

Re: Thinking of coming back!
will be interesting to see how you get on Ian, having been away, when i had one for two days i couldn't wait to give it back and get back in the GTI, even though it had 360+ bhp
at Goodwood i had a good nosey at the new S3 which looks way better in the flesh and you just can't ignore the M135i (apart from rear)
problem with the rocco at the moment is its too expensive and under equipped compared to the new platform cars, VW need to throw toys at it and sharpen their pencils as it is purely trading on looks at the moment
i think its a shame VW did not do a performance pack on the mk7 GTD

Re: Thinking of coming back!
While the S3 is undoubtably quick it doesn't give the impression of speed if that makes sense. I thought the R sounded nicer and seemed more sprightly up through the gears.liory931 wrote:And what is your impressions so far...?
The S3's seem a little lacking on spec, it's ok though I was told - we can retro fit cruise & rear parking for the princely sum of £1000
