Exhaust creaking and cracking noises??

Post by Sincs »

Just noticed lately that after my car has warmed up and if I get out and stand at the back of the car I can hear a cracking noise coming from the tail pipes or the rear section of the exhaust.
It's the same sound you hear when metal expands or shrinks during heating or cooling, kind of like a cracking/ticking noise with no set pattern or rhythm but happens constantly every second or so.

The thing is.. I can still hear it after long drives. I would've thought that once the car has been driven for a long period and everything is warmed up that the noises would stop, but they don't.

My car is an R, so has the twin pipes, but wondering if anybody else with any model has noticed this too??

As far as I'm aware this is normal. Mine does it and it would be more apparent after a long journey as the exhaust would be hotter.

Thanks, good to know it's not just mine and could be normal on rocs.
Never had it on any of my previous cars though, especially not after a long run, when the temperature should be constant... not cooling or warming.

I use to get it on my Clio 200 sport and Fiesta ST so you mustn't have been trying hard enough with previous cars

:D.

I think it's more a case of having OCD with this car. I must've looked like a right nutter on my hands and knees with my ear inside one of the tail pipes! :D

Perfectly normal, just the metal contracting as it cools down
