Help needed please.. (Dash? Rattle / buzzing)
Hi guys, I know many of us are tracking down the rattles and noise that annoy us in our cars.
I'm trying to get rid of one that sounds like it's coming from the dash somewhere, possibly above centre vents.
More of a buzzing noise, when it comes, pressing the dash down above the vents stops it..
So far I have removed the centre vents, dissembled them and used flexible butyl cord (door seal cord from my old Cupra), sticky stuff, great for stopping any plastic creaking. No joy though..
Next I removed the skuttle panel and packed the bracket that holds the ecu unit under the screen, the foam strip was already fitted between the glass and wiper mounting bracket.
Also fitted the foam pads below the skuttle panel at the strut mounts and at the bonnet stay.
So far none of these have worked, is there any where else to try??
I'm thinking a loose wire under the dash or a loose metal clip somewhere dash area?
Although I do know how these sounds can be deceptive and tricky to locate.. I did own a seat...lol
Need some help on this one, thanks for reading the epic long post...

I had an itching creaking noise/rattle from above/front face of the centre vents which went away when I tackled what is in these three posts ....Rob - 73 wrote:I'm trying to get rid of one that sounds like it's coming from the dash somewhere, possibly above centre vents.

Never touched the centre dash area while rectifying. Travelling sound! Don't ask me which one of the three but the centre vent itch has gone. I suspect it was the glove box light mounting. Just blu-tac it temporarily. Thats how I went round during my determined campaigh last November.
Still blissfully silent inside, 3 months later. Amazing how much noise the interior fittings were making.

Cheers mate,
I actually was reading your post earlier about those three locations.. I will give them a go.
Fingers crossed it will resolve the issue.
I keep you posted, thanks again

I had a similar problem with mine, it spent some time at the dealer but kept coming back. I tracked it down to the bonnet stay. It was loose and when I put some paper around it to fix it more firmly the noise has gone!
Good luck, I know how irritating these things can be !

I can hear the same annoying rattling noise!! After weeks of investigating I found it comes from the wipers!!

Sounds stupid, but check for leaves and seeds trapped in the little gutter bit behind the wipers. Sounds like your problem isn't that, but just double check because I had a very strange rattling noise that sounded like it was coming from under the dash and it turned out I had tree seeds and leaves rattling about under there.

Re: Help needed please.. (Dash? Rattle / buzzing)
Update on the rattle /buzzing noise from dash area, I was working on the car from 9am - 11pm in an all out assault to banish this noise.
I started with removing the bonnet strut and going for a drive round the block - noise still there so it ain't that.
Then followed RW1's advice and tackled the glove box light and surrounding trim - noise still there.
Checked the footwell lights and they did rattle a bit, so same treatment as above... When removing the trim under the dash in the drivers footwell I did find a pound coin laying on top if the trim, previous owners....result Sadly the noise is still present.
So change of approach.. I removed the centre vents again, went for a drive - no noise.. Mmmm ??
Had a good look around in the dash there is nothing really to report, couple of looms (head unit/heater/airbag&hazard switch).
They could vibration against the back of the vent ducting, but I doubt it. I might revisit this area once I get some anti vibration tape.
So vents back in, noise back... This time removed wipers, skuttle panel - went for another drive - noise still there.
I decided to place more foam strips along the full run of the metal plate under the windscreen (not just the centre)... Test drive - noise still there WTF!! By this time I was completely gutted, as each time I thought I had found the issue.
Now in saying that, I think it might still be the metal/glass contact... It's the most well documented, I might get denser foam and reapply on Friday.
Post updated... I think the noise has got quieter, all but gone unless on really rough road at slow speeds, sure it is that metal to glass contact.
So once again sorry for the epic post, just need to get this resolved. Thanks for the comments it all helps.

Re: Help needed please.. (Dash? Rattle / buzzing)
Well after taking what seams like half the interior apart I think I have finally got rid of the annoying buzzing / rattle noise.
I had to removal the centre console, applied some foam tape where the centre console meets the underside of the dash. While doing that I found a keyring under the drivers side lower panel, maybe it was vibrating inside the dash causing the noise.
Since I had covered all the other usual areas I was at a loss, so fingers crossed that's it done.
I did get some of the VW anti vibration tape and used that and the felt tape, which seams to be working.
Thanks to all your help... Here's to silent running.. Hopefully.

I'm still looking for my vibration rattle..
Removed rain tray cover, refitted ECU, soundaktor, plastic channel for the Climatronic, removed windscreen washers, added padding to the plastic panels in the footwells, removed the footwell lights, looked underneath the steering and tightened the footwell air supply..
Still there!!!

Re: Help needed please.. (Dash? Rattle / buzzing)
I know mate, it is a total irritant...
When it starts again when your driving trying pressing down on the centre console at the grab handles where they meet the underside of the dash.
I now need to sort a rattle in the drivers door, I had sorted it with some felt but following the cold snap yesterday it has reappeared, I think I might need to remove the door card and install a more permanent fix.
Good luck in tracking it down..

Try padding out the door card from the rubber window seal / drainage thingy!Rob - 73 wrote:I know mate, it is a total irritant...

Lol... That's quite funny as that's the picture I used to fit the felt pad last week..
I might try again, as I said it might just be due to the cold.

Re: Help needed please.. (Dash? Rattle / buzzing)
Another little trick for that sort of case is a little bit of silicon spray. It may still itch but it does it quietly. Just wipe away excess so it leaves only the abrasive edges rubbing with the oil. Works better when very cold as well. I use an old can of Holts Window rubber and plastic lubricant for this.

Re: Help needed please.. (Dash? Rattle / buzzing)
Cheers mate,
I actually did that about a week ago, used a 3in1 silicone spray.
Maybe with the cold snap and some pressure washing/ snow foaming action it has gone.
So I have reapplied tonight and will see how it goes tomorrow.
I have read some posts that there is an oil rather than a spray that you can use and that it lasts a lot longer.
"Gummi pfledge"
Where is the best place to get this? Do halfords sell it? Or is there something better?

On-line... Put "Gummi" in our search up top right and a few posts come up with links. I got mine off Ebay. Wouldn't have said that the applicator suited as its a sponge head with a central plunger drip feed inside the sponge body. You would have to get it onto a screwdriver so as the apply it directly to two rubbing surfaces.

Yeah I did have a look at some links from a detailing site, was thinking the same about the foam applicator and how to get it into the channel on the upper seal.
Might give it a go...
Also read that silicone can lead to a drying out of the seals..?

Re: Help needed please.. (Dash? Rattle / buzzing)
Thought it you wanted to use it instead of Holts Rubber Lube and it was for just a rubbing point like plastic to plastic or plastic to rubber causing noises.
For rubber seals as a whole on the doors and windows, use Krytox. Work it in by rubbing and then wipe down. Lasts longer than Gummi pfledge. VW have it in their EOS handbook for rubber seals on the convertible roof as the EOS suffers from itchy noises.

The noise is gone today after rubbing some silicone spray to the upper and side seals.
Ah nice one.... yeah I think I will get some of the Krytox.

Re: Help needed please.. (Dash? Rattle / buzzing)
My dash rattle/buzz is gone..it fixed itself after more than a year..
I did a 3 000 km roadtrip and about 1500km was in rain and some of the roads are very bouncy.
So I started her up wednesday morning and the rattle was there on cold start for about 2 seconds and then disappeared !
So the long use of wipers could have somehow fixed it or there was a screw somewhere in the dash or where ever that moved from where it was causing the rattle.
