Questions & Scirocco vs Passat CC Equipment

Post by jc74 »

Just been reading the Scirocco and Passat CC brochures. Yes I know the CC is a much bigger car, but the 2.0 TSIs are within £2k list price of each other.
Anyway, It would seem that the Scirocco gets a rather raw deal on a lot of the toys..

- Leather seats. Roc gets heated, CC gets heated AND cooled! (v useful in summer)
- Electric seats. Roc gets electric, CC get electric AND memory! (v useful with 2 drivers)
- Tyres. CC gets 'self healing' tyres!
- Parking Sensors. Roc gets rear, CC gets front, rear, camera AND auto park! (So does Golf!)
- Also CC gets Active Distance Control and Lane Assist

I have a few questions about the Scirocco and was wondering if anyone who's lived with the car for a while had answers...
1> When driver seat is folded forward to allow rear passenger in/out, does the seat return back to original position? - I had a Puma in the past, which didn't always and then was very annoying trying to find exactly the same position I was used to!!
2> Sunroof - does it really turn the cabin into an echo chamber like the topgear magazine suggests? Also, does it increase road noise? (when closed!)
3> The DVD Nav option - is the DVD updated simply by inserting a new version of the DVD, more importantly can has anyone tried speed camera POIs? I'm currently in a 3 series with iDrive and you can simply insert a DVD burned with this stuff...
4> The DVD Nav option - it says it can play DVD video, has anyone tried playing DVD-R full of DiVX? Be useful when I'm sitting in the Chunnel for 30 minutes (rather than cruising the motorway!)
5> Has anyone had 2 average sized adults in the back for 2+ hr journey? Were you cursed afterwards? I sat in the back in the showroom and it seems... OK, but then that was just for 30 seconds!
6> Any idea when 1.4 160 DSG is coming out? VW dealer has no clue and is pushing me to go for the 2.0GT saying I shouldn't even consider the 1.4... (though I think it's because they want a sale!)
7> How's the car day to day around town with potholes etc in comfort mode? I bought my 3 series thinking it was ok during a short test drive, but day to day the hard ride around central London with it's zillions of potholes really gets to you! - I can understand why there are so many 4x4s!
8> Has anyone NOT ordered luxury carpet mats? - If so, what do you get - just the bare trim on the floor? or do you get some cheapo default rubber mats thrown in?
9> USB port, has anyone had any problems with it? - I'm dubious because I used to have a 1 series with this feature and it would randomly think the device was disconnected after a couple of hours. Hope this plus the Nav works flawlessly for hours on end?

If I go ahead, this will be the first time in a very long while I've bought a car and choose the exterior over the interior! - I really really wished that they had put the Mk6 Golf interior into this car

I know the Scirocco looks better etc, but I was just a bit disappointed it lost out on a few options.

Oh one more question. Does anyone have the Bluetooth telephone preparation option?
Is it really as bad and so incompatible as a few people say it is???
I find it hard to believe VW would mess up so badly. BMW, Ford etc have all got very functional Bluetooth options which actually work with most phones - surely it can't be that hard?
Real shame, since I really wanted this option, but am using a Sony Ericsson k850i (which works with BMW and Ford).

The Sunroof comment is B*ll*cks. I have roof and no wind noise and the Dynaudio sounds superb . The car is quieter and more refined than my Mk5 Gti.Hope this helps

It already is, it's just that all dealers doesn't know about it.

1> When driver seat is folded forward to allow rear passenger in/out, does the seat return back to original position? - I had a Puma in the past, which didn't always and then was very annoying trying to find exactly the same position I was used to!! Yes it goes back to exactly the same place afterwards.

2> Sunroof - does it really turn the cabin into an echo chamber like the top gear magazine suggests? Also, does it increase road noise? (when closed!) I think TG were struggling to find something negative about the Scirocco when writing that. Replacing a portion of the soft headliner by a glass panel will change the acoustics of the interior but this could be said for any car. There are enough rocs about, try both.

3> The DVD Nav option - is the DVD updated simply by inserting a new version of the DVD, more importantly can has anyone tried speed camera POIs? I'm currently in a 3 series with iDrive and you can simply insert a DVD burned with this stuff... Not sure.

4> The DVD Nav option - it says it can play DVD video, has anyone tried playing DVD-R full of DiVX? Be useful when I'm sitting in the Chunnel for 30 minutes (rather than cruising the motorway!) No playback of DVD's whilst on the move that's for sure unless you have the unit coding modified or use additional screens, this is pretty much the case with all OEM units down to liability in the event of an accident. The manual says "you may not be able to play DVD's you have burnt yourself” don’t think DIVX will work either.

5> Has anyone had 2 average sized adults in the back for 2+ hr journey? Were you cursed afterwards? I sat in the back in the showroom and it seems... OK, but then that was just for 30 seconds! Not for 2hrs yet, but for at least an hour with no complaints. Both were under six foot, the "average size" of people in each country is different which is why packaging the interior of a vehicle is a nightmare. There is lots of legroom it's just the headroom which is not so great but having said that i sat in the back of an S3 last week and have to say the Roc seemed to be as accommodating if not more because of the legroom.

6> Any idea when 1.4 160 DSG is coming out? VW dealer has no clue and is pushing me to go for the 2.0GT saying I shouldn't even consider the 1.4... (though I think it's because they want a sale!) Don't listen to dealers they are full of BS. It will be available very soon i believe and for many will be the ideal Scirocco. The 1.4 TSI and 7 Speed DSG will be a great combo in the Roc, i believe a new 7 speed DSG is in development for the 2.0 TSI also to replace the six speed. I had heard the A4 was getting it very soon a while back. VW's priority is to shift cars already built and in the system which means the launch models.

7> How's the car day to day around town with potholes etc in comfort mode? I bought my 3 series thinking it was ok during a short test drive, but day to day the hard ride around central London with it's zillions of potholes really gets to you! - I can understand why there are so many 4x4s! Was the 3-series using run flat tyres? These contribute a lot to the harsh ride on many BMW's granted the latest gen RFT are a lot better but still not as forgiving as regular tyres. The car is very stiff with little roll hence the great handling, the ACC does a great job with the damping and it doesn't really get crashy i find even in sport.

8> Has anyone NOT ordered luxury carpet mats? - If so, what do you get - just the bare trim on the floor? or do you get some cheapo default rubber mats thrown in? No mats supplied as standard, you will just have the carpet. You can order the dealer fit mats if you want which are roughly the same price and have Scirocco stitched into them on the front ones. Some of the guys on the forum have posted pics in the gallery. This area of the car always get a battering and i would recommend some mats to avoid long term damage to the carpet. Replacement carpets are mega money.

9> USB port, has anyone had any problems with it? - I'm dubious because I used to have a 1 series with this feature and it would randomly think the device was disconnected after a couple of hours. Hope this plus the Nav works flawlessly for hours on end? It is not a USB port as such, but you can attach USB devices. The MDI is more sophisticated than a simple USB port and allows you to connect to a wider range of devices. You can use the dedicated Ipod lead which gives you full functionality over your ipod including showing the track names etc on the head unit. The unit also works with playlists on the Ipod. If like me you don't want to leave your ipod in the car you can connect a USB drive, mine was £15 from amazon for 16GB and i have around 100 albums on it. This also displays the track names etc on the head unit and can be controlled via the head unit or steering wheel controls. You can can also insert an SD card directly into the unit with the same results, apparently the nav unit is a little more restricted when it comes to using SD cards in comparison to the standard RCD510. A top system with or without Nav.

If I go ahead, this will be the first time in a very long while I've bought a car and choose the exterior over the interior! - I really really wished that they had put the Mk6 Golf interior into this car [/quote] The interior of the Roc in my opinion is better than the Golf on the whole, i really don't like the look of the door trims on the new Golf. However i would agree that by fitting the new AC unit / Steering wheel and cluster with the white MDI from the new Golf would improve the Roc interior and make it pretty much perfect. I believe all of these will be introduced shortly as part of a model year update and will probably include other features that are available on the Passat / Golf etc such as Reversing Camera, Park Assist, Active cruise. This will come after the new GTi hits the dealerships i think which is a dilemna for people about to order.

Woah, seriously? I've never bought a new car that didn't have carpet mats of some kind fitted as standard? They came as standard on my Golf MK5 GTi. Civic Type-R and every other car I've bought? Can't believe VW would flog you a car for £23k with just bare carpets and no mats at all :(

Can anyone else confirm this?

Yep you've got to fork out for mats or try and get the dealer to throw them in as part of the deal.

Thanks for the replies, and jonallen for the detailed one. Shame I didn't read it until after I've ordered this morning!
However, I am a bit nervous about the rumours that they will update the interior in the future  .
Still, very happy with the car in general after a brief test drive, and have ordered a 2.0TSI DSG, since too impatient to wait for the 1.4 DSG. Also dealer was giving what seems a good deal to take one of the cars they have in stock before end of March (1st quarter targets I suspect).

Where are I am tempted to change for a passat CC. Scirocco is a great car but it's lacking something. I just don't know what.

Yes - I suspect I almost upset my dealer when I got a bit annoyed when they said that mats would be £69 extra. They are agreeing to provide some now, but I suspect they will be VW generic ones! My justification was when you spend £23K on a car, you expect to get mats thrown in, but it was a reluctant gesture I can tell you.

I can feel your pain! However last time I got a huge discount on a Golf Mk5, they definitely didn't give me the carpet mats for free and out of protest I bought them from a different dealer

This time round, after ordering with the agreed discount, I asked for EU plates and was told it's £25 extra(!!!) WTF. Anyway salesperson will refer to manager. But I will be very ******* off if I have to pay for that! Since it's never been a problem in the past

Yeah, there is a guy with a Black Passat CC by me who has shown a keen interest in the Roc. I caught him slowing down and pointing it out to his passenger this week. :D

Well the dealer can either thrown in a set of mats when I pick up my car or I'm going to take the ones out of my part-ex Golf GTi before I give them the keys to it cause I'm not driving my Scirocco home without mats of some kind in it!
