Indium Grey with IROC grill surround.

Post by sweeney782 »

In 2006 the Scirocco was presented at the Geneva Motor Show at the IROC Concept. One of the most distinctive features was the Silver Grill surround . Sadly, this did not go into production because it was perceived by marketing as being too similar to Audi and so it was changed to the profile we have now.
I have tried to hint at the IROC history by making a plastic vacuum forming that continues the upper grill into the lower. Yes, painting it silver would of course moved even nearer to the original but, i wanted it to be subtle and little unnoticeable, as if it just belongs to the car. Hope you like it. John.

The lower bit looks quite good imo, however I wouldn't have gone for the GTi badge since the car is not a GTi and there is not a Scirocco GTi in production what's the point in calling it that...

The car is a GTTDI only the TD is too much hence the abbreviation.

OK fair enough, my car is a Scirocco GT, but it I remove some letters, rearrange, and add a G L F and I I get GOLF GTi which it is not. But as long as you are happy

I understand what you are saying and clearly you are are interpreting it as a historic GTI. This is not my intention what so ever to try and project this. The badge is a contemporary abbreviation of GTTDI nothing more, it is not trying to pretend anything else. I would appreciate you looking at it as just a graphic detail and not interpreting it as you have been. Thank you anyway for your comments.

The standard badge is too big for me, so I replaced it with a smaller VW badge. However, there are 3 location points pressed into the badge recess which are visible just outside outer edge of the smaller badge, so I covered them with a vac- formed plastic ring that was painted Indium Grey. The final outcome was disappointing and I shall shall remove it soon.

The painted grill is awesome..but yeah the the GTI badge looks odd...maybe you shouldn't have gone for the abbreviation.

Thank you for your comment about the grill surround. Prior to the forum posting I have only receieved good comments even with the controversial badge, so that has been a little unexpected but I do take on board why it is perceieved in a negative way.

I think youve taken abit of an unfair pasting here. In my opinion the VW sign doesnt look great but the GTI badge 'looks' cool, regardless of whether it should be on the car or not.

Thats my twopennath anyway!
