Warning light- urgent advice please

Post by bluedjlatte »

Driving down from London to Somerset today in my 2009 2l diesel DSG Scirocco and the yellow engine shaped warning light came on. I have checked the manual and all it says is something along the lines of 'fault with the exhaust system refer to VW technician'.
I have to make the return journey tomorrow (Sunday)and will not be able to get to a VW dealer until Monday. Does anyone know what this light is indicating and will I be doing any serious harm if I make the return journey with it on?
All other dials and gauges on the dash are giving normal readings at the moment.
Would be grateful for any advice.

It will be D.P.F. clogged. A motorway run at a light throttle opening should do the trick. Don’t run on supermarket Diesel treat it to some V Power or the like as you will get less soot in the exhaust gases.

Thanks for that. I didn't see your reply until after I made the return journey (without any further problems). The light is still on but nothing else seems to be affected. No funny noises and performance and fuel economy are ok. I will try what you say tomorrow and see if that clears it.

I had exactly the same. It was a faulty exaust gas sensor on mine. It was replaced under warranty. If the light doesn't go out that's what it is. Nothing to worry about really. I think this is a common fault on all VW models as there was a dodgy batch of sensors. Mine is a 2009 model too.

I went to the local VW dealer first thing this morning for advice. I thought they might send someone out just to have a quick look over it but all they did was book it into the workshop. Anyway,a few miles down the road, after I had left the dealers the light went out. So, it sorted itself out, pretty much as predicted! I will keep an eye on it but as you say, it looks like it might be an intermittent fault with a sensor. The car still has a year of warranty left so I should be ok if anything does need to be changed.
Thanks for your help.

My Golf V 1.6 FSI had three separate faults with NOx sensors and ignition coils. My Scirocco's a couple of years old now so I'm just waiting for light to come on...

The light came back on today so it looks like I will be keeping my booking at the dealer for a couple of weeks time.

I just had my exhaust gas sensor replaced on my Roc last month for the same problem.
