RNS510 voice control assistance please.
Hi guys. Wonder if some kind soul could assist with a couple of queries I have on my RNS voice control that I installed this afternoon.
I updated the RNS from my previous V1300 firmware to (I think) 2840 from the mygti.com website. Everything went well (phew) and after activating microphone diagnosing and de-ticking the voice control not active box in VCDS, I had a new sub-section in the setup menu for voice control.
Then proceeded to install the Kaufatec wiring mod to add the RNS into the loop for the overhead mic that was previously only connected to the factory fitted Bluetooth. Again, whilst a pain all went well.
Now here's my 2 issues.
Firstly, if I press the button on the steering wheel, it only activates voice dialling for the phone, and only the phone commands are recognised. If I say for instance, RADIO it can't recognise it and proceeds to list the available phone commands (like dial number, dial last number, contact etc). Is there something I need to untick in the Phone module?
Secondly, if I press the voice button on the RNS itself, it does indeed activate voice control and I can say RADIO, MDI, NAVIGATION etc, and it does swap to these items, so I know its working.
However, one of the reasons for getting Voice control working was to control my IPod via the MDI. Rather than taking my eye off the road to search for a track, I just wanted to say something like MDI, PLAYLISTS, PLAYLIST NO.3 (for instance).
When I try, although it flips to the MDI and then says "and further", if I say PLAYLIST or ALBUM etc, It says these commands are not available. I've seen this working like this in videos on YouTube, so don't know what I'm going wrong?
Anyone any ideas.
Oh yes, finally, in the setup menu, there's a section for "deleted voice tags" what's all this about and can you create user own voice tags for certain items, and if so how please ?
Thanks in advance.
Andrew

First and second points are the same as mine and quite a few other users too.

Re: RNS510 voice control assistance please.
Shaun,
Manged to get point 2 working (of a fashion). Problem was I was actually saying "PLAYLIST" when obviously the unit doesn't understand that word. I tried again this time saying "UP" until I arrived at the root of the Ipod, so that it was displaying "SONGS, GENRES" etc. I ten said "SCROLL UP", and it then showed the first section of the Ipod menus, which was the PLAYLISTS. By sayin the number next to the playlists or Album I was then able to enter playlists, albums, altrist etc and select the music of choice.
I did a quick and dirty Youtube Vid of it at action. If anyone knows a better way, or if it's possible to record a voice tag for playlists, albums etc, please let us know.
Youtube vid here@
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
(Oh, and no comments about the music choice , i'm not a twenty something year old any more).
As to the steering wheel only allowing the Phone to activate rather than the RNS, well I'm still looking into this and will report back if I can find ans answer.

Looking around about your problem, i found something that i think you can try :Sootchucker wrote: Firstly, if I press the button on the steering wheel, it only activates voice dialling for the phone, and only the phone commands are recognised. Voice Command Coding Issue
Step 1: Select address ’77 – Telephone’
Step 2: Select ‘Coding – 07’
Step 3: For the RNS510, make sure the code in the ‘Software Coding’ line is ‘0013002’. Alternatively, code ‘0013022’ disables voice control of BT via the RNS510. Use this for the RCD510.
RNS510 = 0013002 – This uses the voice control functionality of the RNS510 with firmware v2660 or greater.
RCD510 = 0013022 – This uses the voice control functionality of the Bluetooth unit. The RCD510 does not have voice control.
Step 4: Select ‘Do It!’ in the coding window.

Mines a C LED version with its original 2680 on it still.Sootchucker wrote:What version of RNS and firmware are you running Shaun ?
Re: RNS510 voice control assistance please.
I've replaced an older Bluetooth unit in our CC with the 3C8 module and the steering wheel button went from being able to use RNS voice commands plus voice dialling to just voice dialling. No coding was changed on the steering wheel or RNS modules, so it looks like the new modules may just behave in this way.Sootchucker wrote:Firstly, if I press the button on the steering wheel, it only activates voice dialling for the phone, and only the phone commands are recognised. Re: RNS510 voice control assistance please.
Well something strange happened yesterday. I was messing around with the coding of the phone module in VCDS last weekend, and following advise from over at VWnavi.com, un-ticked the voice control option in the [77] phone module. Re starting the RNS, no difference, the steering wheel still controlled only the phone not the RNS.
I thought bug*er this, and forgot about it. Then yesterday on the way home from work, I went to change tracks on the steering wheel and lazily and accidentally hit the voice control button instead. To my surprise, the main help screen for the RNS came up - Not the phone. So I tried it and said, "Navigation" and sure enough it took me to the navigation screen. I've tested it all day today (on the way to work, at lunchtime and on the way home), and the steering wheel button perfectly activates voice control for the RNS every time ? I can still even control the phone by just saying "Phone" first to activate that module, then just continue as I used to ( for instance phone book, call last number etc).
Don't know what I did or why it suddenly decided to work, unless it needed a total power down (I.e. Overnight) to fully re-boot the system?
Just thought I'd let you all know. Mines an April 2011 build so it's seems it is possible. The only problem I do have is learning a new way to say "UP", if I want to go to a previous menu within the media section, as every time I say it, is responds with "MAP" and switches to the map. However if I say " UP" leaning forward and towards the roof mic, it picks it up no problem, so I might mess around with the mic sensitivity in VCDS over the weekend to see if it's just set a bit low from a normal position in the drivers seat.

Re: RNS510 voice control assistance please.
I ticked the "voice control inactive" option last night then this morning was out in the car and tested it - you lose the ability to say " call person x on mobile" etc. but gain the ability to use the phone button on the steering wheel to control the RNS. Personally, I'm going back to what I had so that I can use the "call person x on mobile" option after pressing the steering wheel button and if I want to use voice control on the RNS I'll press the star button on it to do that.

Re: RNS510 voice control assistance please.
Hi Guys! I have a bt premium and an rns510 with fw 4020. I activated the voice control with vag but I have to push the little star on the rns510 unit to start the voice control.
Instead, with the button on the steering wheel I activate only the voice control for the phone.
UPDATE
To use the button on steering wheel to control the rns510 voice commands on a Scirocco with the bt premium you have to select the "voice operating inactive" in telephone 77, byte 1. I hope that it will be usefull for someone
