What oil are you running in your 2.0TSI (non-long life)

Time has come for me to get some.

Looked in the manual, long life isn't ticked. Seems they did an oil change back in November when it had it's last service, but I got the yellow icon now appearing, so I need to buy some.

It states VW 502 00, now for someone who's never brought oil, it's confusing at first seeing numbers that everyone else seems to use like 5w40 / 5w30. I understand that I need one of those though. As I said it's not long life. It's on a yearly service.

So what are you Roccer's rocking? - I'll have to pick some up in a shop, so damn looks like I'll miss out on Quidco, although it might be a chance to try that new Halfords in store 4.5% cashback thing!

They will have almost certainly have put in 504/507 standard. Irrespective of 12 month or longlife servicing.

Why don't you give the dealer's service desk and ask which oil brand they are putting, 5w30.

5W30 should do it.

I put a litre in mine about 6 months after the first service. Seemed fine. 502, 504 and 507 are all pretty much the same and 5W30 covers them all.

I know the majority of VW dealers now use longlife oil (504.00/507.00) 5W30 no matter what service regime the car is on. You can pick up some Castrol Edge 5w30 at your local BP / Halfords / Tesco / Asda.

Otherwise just look at the back of the bottle in halfords and pick a 5w30 that says 502.00 on the back and you can't go wrong.

I NEVER let it get that low to trigger it. Check the dip at least once a month and have top up oil at home.

Bought 2 bottles this week for 2 different cars. Quantumn 5w30 LL oil for a VW, Castrol Edge 5w30 for an Audi

For my own car it gets Shell Helix 5w30

Hey this thing never happened at all in 17k miles of my last car. These things really drink oil it seems. I never check inside the hood. The more I stay out of there the more things work.

I'm going to Tesco Sat morning, will it be ok until then? - Sounds stupid but I have a voucher for spending over £50 there. Really want to use it. I've tightened the purse strings that much I need a penknife to open it.

Great responses, I have heard Castrol Edge is decent from other people and seeing it here mirrors that too.

To be honest all major oil brands are as good as each other. The key is that it's 5w30 and that it meets or exceeds the qoted specs

This is freaking me out now. I called the dealer to check and they asked the year, what service plan it's on and the fuel type. I answered these, he asked someone else and said It's on "540". Of course I was like "That's 5w40 right?" and he confirmed.

Everyone here is saying 5w30. Surely mixing the oils would be buggery. So ofc I don't want that. I've never bled oil from a car before, and why should I here. Christ I just need to top it up. But it's gone beyond a simple task now. It's confusing the hell out of me. I guess I have to go with what the dealer said and not with you guys.

I've read that elsewhere also, but the guy was like "no don't mix it". Will call them back. Even Halfords says my number plate (and then when I've searched by model) state 05w30.

I'm off on my way there now. Fully synthetic is the only one that seems to be a "defo".

The reason for 5w40 is because I have the 2 year service plan. so its not on long life. He confirmed it has 540 in now.

Glad you got it sorted mate and are happy but to be perfectly honest 5w30 vs 5w40 is nothing to do with whether it's on longlife or fixed. It's the viscosity at higher operating temperatures. The 5w40 will maintain viscosity at a higher temperature. Not really an issue unless you drive in Dubai or do track days.

If you look under oil in your handbook you should see a graph of which oil viscosity to use vs ambient temperature.

Even on fixed servicing I still use fully synthetic longlife oil as IMO it's of a higher quality than the semi-synthetic stuff they used to use on fixed servicing

I always have Longlife put in mine irrespective of whether its on LL or T&D

5w40 cos it's on 2 yr service plan is complete nonsense. As cuprabob says reason there are other specs of oil like 5w40 or 10w50 etc etc is there operating temperature window.

5w30 (507 00 approved) is THE default oil for a VAG engines used in the UK these days. Poured some into a 2.7 V6 TDI earlier.

To be fair he did mention that there was no real difference in the oil, but it was because I was on T&D and not long life.

Meh, it's cheaper apparently, don't plan on doing any track days or especially going to Dubai lol. So 5w40 it is.

I actually mis-typed, 5w40 is for higher temperatures. If you're happy that's all that matters and as you say 5w40 was already used in the car so it's all good.

The frustrating thing is that you go to a dealer to get "professional" advice and in the majority of times all you end up getting is bullshit or lies.

Yup. Quite disappointed. Was in Tesco and they had no 5w40 only Partially Synthetic. But there was some 5w30 Castrol Magnatec for like £8.50 if I recall. Did say Vauxhall on the front rather randomly.

However on the petrol garage forecourt, they had some Carlube 05w40. I didn't get it though.

Yes, that will do the job. These days oil is not fuel specific

Sorry, only time I remember doing anything with oil was my dad filling up his Morris Ital.
