Is the Scirocco a reliable car?
Is the Scirocco a reliable car?
I have been reading the posts on this site. We have posts regarding a new engine at 34,000 , drifting to the left, air con cutting out and a host of features regarding reliability problems. I went for the brand due to my perception its a reliable marque. Yet given the relatively small number of owners I am amazed at how many problems there appear to be. It may be we have had a lot just now, but what would you say about reliability. People who have had more than one might be in the best position to comment but anyone would be most welcome to relate their views.
I am getting mine on the 27June, I hope I will be having trouble free motoring like I had with two skoda superbs where nothing at all ever went wrong for the past 6 years.

As with a lot of consumer products and the Internet, you're much more likely to hear from people who have had problems than those who haven't.
No issues for me at all regarding reliability.

Re: Is the Scirocco a reliable car?
Well what Kev says is true - people are more likely to write up about a problem they have rather than writing in to say "everything's fine and running well". And up to now I've had no issues with my 1.4 TSi 160, 18 months down the line with 15k on the clock.
However compared to the MG forum I used to inhabit (and you wouldn't put MG Rover down as a beacon for reliability) there do seem to be more threads being raised about reliability problems and failures than ever seemed to be on the MG site.
Now maybe that's because VW owners have higher expectations or their marque, or maybe its because people are more awake to the web as a source of sharing complaints / problems.
This wasn't the case on this forum a year or two ago - but the Rocs were all still quite new then. Nevertheless its becoming a bit of a moaner's corner which can be a downer when you want some light relief.

Re: Is the Scirocco a reliable car?
(Car is now at 32100km) Well I’ve been having some issues, turns out one of the fans was broken that is why the temperature would go above 90, but what was weird is that they didn’t notice it during the general revision at 30000km altho i did bring up the issue before the revision and after (heres a link of all the problems i got: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7955&hilit=+what+to+do+next" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) . So i wonder if the garage is any good. Another issue that happened was that the rpm is playing and they told me that they will have to contact Germany to see what the issue is and that could take weeks. I did get a courtesy car (golf mk6 122hp) and damn it’s a slow car.
TBH i keep on shifting my mind on what to do sell or keep it. It is a great car and all most of my friends that have a Rocco and don’t get any issues so maybe i was just unlucky. But what if i am not. They haven’t driven their cars as much as i have so maybe they will get these problems (hopefully not tho) so I am worried that if i purchased an r i would get the same issues down the line, so im lloking at other options (i dont think they look better than the rocco but at least i wont get as many problems): lexus isf, dodge cahrager srt8 or rt. Im open to any ideas on what to get next?

Re: Is the Scirocco a reliable car?
When people have problems they tend to look for ways to vent it, forums being the easiest. I think its a very reliable and well built car, there will always be exceptions though. I've tracked my car 3 times in the last year, will probably do 4/5. Not a single engine / drive problem. Only issue is the standard brakes, which are inadequate for track work really - but that would be the same for any car.
BMW 123d M Sport has issues, and if you want to see what engine problems are, look at the latest Subaru Impreza STI (2.5l UK unit). One of the main forums had a topic with 12pages of posts with engines which had gone.

Re: Is the Scirocco a reliable car?
coming up to 17k miles...no problems here. It's been driven properly too.
Re: Is the Scirocco a reliable car?
Only possibly-major thing is the DSG mechatronics probably about to be replaced. Other than that, nothing to write home about.
Other than that, 18,000 miles later and still enjoying the drive.

Had a water leak where the pump was replaced under warranty (at just before 7000), apart from that all fine!

Re: Is the Scirocco a reliable car?
with so many electronics and thru cost cutting, there is no one brand that stands out for reliability. Even Toyota screwed up.
But also, the driver/ owner has the responsibility to maintain the wellness of the car. I know people who drive till the warning light comes on...
almost 15k miles and i have no problem yet. Apart from a miss aligned bonnet!

59 plate (though I think it was an pre August 2009 car) with 10,000 miles. Only the usual rattle which as I have music on, doesn't bother me that much.

Re: Is the Scirocco a reliable car?
I didn't expect the car to be so noisy inside but other than that, its a good drive. Just blast the music and roll on.
