Cherished plate transfer

Chaps, my new Rocco arrived at the dealers on Friday afternoon, and I gave agreed to collect this Thursday (as im off work on Friday and Monday so have a good chance to play with it).

Went to look at it on Friday, and it looks great and more importantly the specification is spot on what I ordered. One thing I was disappointed at though was rather than my private plate (which is currently on the Golf) being transferred straight onto the Rocco as agreed, they have told me I need to take it on an 11 plate until DVLA sort out the paperwork which could take 10-14 days.

Personally I think they forgot about the plate transfer as they only asked me for my log book, MOT and copy of my current tax disc on Friday. I could wit a few weeks until the plate comes through, but does this sound right? I though the dealers could just go to the local DVLA office and get it sorted there and then. Is that not the case ?

I wish they had asked me for my paperwork earlier so this could have been sorted in good time. Just fell a little let down and it's taken a little bit of the shine of the collection on Thursday.

If they're going to take the hit for the transfer I wouldn't worry about it... they're going to have to pay to register it and then pay to transfer the reg over.

If you're that bothered - wait and tell them not to register it!

I waited 2 weeks after car arrived at dealer before I took delivery partly due to the plate transfer. It does take a good few days and is a bit of faff. And that DVLA charge something like £80 for it now.

So if you want your car on Thursday then yeah you have to run around with the 11 plate before the plate transfer paperwork is all done. I would recommend waiting and let the dealer sort it all before taking delivery.

The DVLA changed this process few years ago and you can't just turn up at local office to do it anymore. Needs to be all sent off etc. Sometimes you can get a quick turnaround but no guarantees.

2 years ago I picked up my 09 Roc with the 09 plate when it was new, then drove to the DVLA office. I couldn't be bothered to queue so I dropped off the paperwork in the letter box and it was all processed within 2 days by them, and posted back. I will do the same in a few weeks time when I collect my 11 plate Roc.

But the downside is that I think I have to pay £25 to make changes to my insurance policy, so I might end up shelling out 2 x £25 - one to let them know about the 11 plate, and one to know about the change to my personal plate (plus the DVLA fee of course). So I might not do the change immediately. I guess I could ask the dealer to do all the work but then I'd miss out on driving my new Roc for a couple of weeks and that would never do.

Well I've decided to take the car on the 11 plate for now as the dealer said they will pick up all the costs associated with the private plate transfer. They will be sending the details off today, and as I don't pick up the car until Thursday, I guess I'll only be driving it for 5-8 days before the plate will be changed.

The brand manager (who I know well) wasn't happy that I wasn't happy, so as a way of apeasing me, they have offered me free mudflpas (Front and rear) and premium carpet mats which is well over the £150 mark, so all in all, a good result as I was going to purchase these anyway.

Roll on thursday.

If your putting the mudflaps on make sure they put something underneath them to protect the paint.

Good point Shaun. I was looking for some of that 3m style clear transparent film for the fronts one. Rear's should be OK as they are only on plastic.

Sootchucker: Is there not something else you'd rather have than mudflaps for similar money? They don't look good on a Roc, they trap crap behind them, being a constant moisture trap, and do very little to protect your car.

How about a free Lifeshine treatment instead, maybe not so much for the shine (for lazy sods who don't wax their car), but for the interior "scotch-guard" type treatment?

Possibly some other accessories like some rubber mats (for when the weather is crap)and loadliner?

If you do get the mudflaps anyway, are they going to fit them? They usually charge an hours labour for fitment. It's an easy fix with the wheels off (which they will do) but it is quite feasable to do with the wheels on if you use torx bits with a small socket ratchet or in the teeth of a set of mole grips - it doesn't take any longer than the extra time taking off wheels and replacing them (although you might get some scraped knuckles)

I appreciate what you are saying, but I do want the mud flaps, had them on all my cars including the current Golf.
I know they are not to everyone's taste, but that's what makes us all different.

To answer your question NO, there is no way I would ever let a dealer fit mud flaps or would I ever have the life grime (sorry shine). I'm an amateur detailer anyway with over £1k's with of polishing machines, waxes, sealants etc, so I will look after the car well.

As soon as I get it the wheels will be off for polishing and sealing inside and out so will do the mud flaps then, and as Shaun intimated, I will be fitting transparent film behind the front ones to protect the paint anyway (just ordered it).

Sounds like your dealer has done quite a bit for you already - the one I usually go to would've probably just shrugged their shoulders, like they did when they botched a major repair on my old Golf.

TBH, I think the dealership is no better or worse than most, it's just that we have purchased 4 cars from them in 5 years (over £72K's worth), and we got to know the brand manager really well. To be fair he's a real nice guy and if he ever sees us always makes a point of coming our of his office to say hello and shake our hands. Totally first name terms with most in the dealership, so he calls us "his best customers", which I'm sure we are not, but he treats us really well all the same.

Can't really fault them on that score.

your right hes looking after you , youve took 4 cars off him and given him 72 grand , so he should , hes not stupid

regarding the plate transfer the vw dealership did all the donkey work for me but i paid the 80 pound fee
i belive all good dealerships do this regardless of manufacturer unless your stupid enought to buy a fiat
