My Candy R
After a 6 month wait I finally took delivery of my R on Sat! Woop!
I arrived at the dealership to find the car sitting there waiting for me inside, always nice to see its ready to be picked up. Had a look over it and all looked good, so paid my monies, signed some forms and she was mine!
I'll start with the negatives, lol:
- I need to change the interior bulbs asap! they're horribly yellow, although i like being able to drive with the footwell lights on, these need to be white in colour. as does the wing mirror lights. was nice to see i had a cover over my ash tray, so i wont need to change that at least.
- I also can't seem to set the coming home and other type light feature? been through the menu system, set both as +10seconds but doesn't seem to be quite the same as my golf was. I basically want the lights to come on when i unlock the car, and then when i lock it, they stay on for a period of time. what am i doing wrong?
- Also, on my dash screen, my speed is displayed in kph, whilst my cruise control is in mph. looking through the menus it seems to be set on UK MPH, so can't understand why its displaying kph at all. any ideas?
- i aslo seem to have a small rattle/clunk from the boot/rear area. out today i couldn't hear it as much as saturday, but only really noticeable if its rough road. any known issues on this? could be my imagination, so ill see how it goes.
- haven't tried to even begin looking at the bluetooth. can anyone give me an quick idiots guide to pairing my iphone and using this feature?
- a few of the plastics in the cabin feel a bit cheap which is a shame, especially for the R. in particular the central cupholder plastics and the arms that go up to the aircon, but i guess ill live with it. also, the key itself, really poor quality plastic. its a shame they didn't use a key like that for the TT, which has nice tactic plastic and a hint of aluminium, for the R at least if not the whole range.
- i thought i heard a slight noise when turning at 3/4 lock in a car park, but i might be imagining that too as i havent heard it again, keeping my ears pealed.
Now to the good bits / observations:
- the car is absolutely dreamy to drive! coming from a Pirelli GTI i thought it would be virtually identical but a tiny bit faster. How wrong could i be! its soooo smooth in everything it does. the steering is a delight and seems to flow round the corners, a lot more planted than the golf ever was.
- although im keeping revs to 3/3.5k for the first few hundred miles, the engine seems a lot more powerful than the golf was. really impressed!
- the exhaust is a delight! never really get much impression from youtube vids, but in the car its got a really nice deep bass pulling away, and on the move, dare i say it, has a straight 6 esc noise under load? again, coming from my GTI as perspective, i am very impressed, so intrigued to see what the milltek sounds like in comparison!
- the nav system seems good, but not really tried to find anywhere in anger with it, so will reserve judgement. when changing songs using the ipod, it occassionaly, decides to skip a song ahead which is a bit annoying, but rarely happens. the dynaudio sounds nice, although the bass isn't as good as i anticipated.
- i love the frameless doors, really adds that sporty touch!
- obviously everyone knows what it looks like, but it really does look amazing. the LED running lights finish it off imo, the number of people who stare at it is insane, plus got some taking pics only an hour after i got it! 5 miles down the road and a 2.0 TSI RB Rocco pulled up alongside at some lights in Reading, the driver gave me the thumbs up! haha brothers in arms!
- done about 250 miles so far, trying my best to restrain my enthusiasm! looking forward to getting to 900ish so i can open her up and really see what she's got!
- my first mod was to take off the horrible dealer stickers and put a nice black tax disc holder in. also started work on some new black badges, will post some pics when they're done and on!
- overall, despite my intial grumblings which really are only small things, i am delighted!
Anyway, that's about, here's a pic shortly after i took delivery.

Congrats
to clear up a few of your questions;
- coming home lights, you need to flash your lights before exiting the vehicle
- the digital speed is in kph because it is not present on the speedo and it is a requirement for driving on the continent. you can't change this
- rattle is possibly boot struts that need adjusting out slightly more, instructions on here somewhere

Re: My Candy R
Thanks Trix! Good to know!
Since posting iv noticed something a bit worrying. My bonnet on the drivers side seems to overhang the wing somewhat. Passenger side alignment looks ok, but drivers side is def not right! only just noticed. Guess this is either the bonnet or the wing?
Looks like I'll be on the phone to the dealer tomorrow first thing!
Anyone else had this or got any ideas what it is?

Re: My Candy R
Yay.. Congratulations Strat
The bonnet is supposed to overhang, but if you are saying only one side then No !
Have to say when i first got mine a year ago i thought the same as you, compared to my Edition 30 certain parts felt cheap and very plastic, but TBH don't even think about it now its all about the drive and i love the car more than ever.
There is a code for the lights so you don't have to flash your stalk, you need someone with VCDS to do it for you, Lee and I had ours done on Friday.
Enjoy.....
