Car not responding to remote key

Post by adel218 »

Dont know what happen to the car or remote key cause suddenly it was not responding to the remote when i press unlock..weird.. even got a bit panic in the beginning then I started to take a deep breath and tried to open the car manually..

First use your key and insert it in a key hole on the bar handle of the driver door side. Then gently tilt the key remote towards you.. (let me know if you need picture aids to do this) it will then slowly unclip itself. If your still having difficulty unclipping it try pulling the door handle after you have tilt it a bit. This normaly helps.

Once door open, i realize there is no power?? even more weird... so insert the key still nothing.. then went out of the car close the door, suddenly all the lights and works starts to function as normal.. Hmmnnn really wierd.. (I actually changed the remote key battery thought tat would solve the problem in the beginning)

So should i go to the dealer or just ignore this weird behavior?? Just got the car late october 2010.

I had a Seat Ibiza hire car that did this, turned out it had lost its synch with the remote, and was most likely caused by me using the remote at too great a distance, ( car thinks its being cloned, and wont accept further commands unless you manually unlock it and go through a set process )

However that was in 2001, its probably all different now!!

There is a warning iirc in the handbooks not to repeatedly press the fob buttons while out of range. ie. warning it can loose sync..

Yeah, I can understand that. But what I don't understand is how the spare fob (which I rarely use) stays in sync as I thought the code was continually changing to avoid remote cloning.

Perhaps, just maybe, the system uses different codes for each key. . . . .

The key fobs are individual and have to be coded into the Scirocco's system for it to recognise the individual fobs coding. So one unused fob will stay in sync.. And the alarm behaves like Thatcham 1 alarm standard although VW don't state.

One of the requirements of T1 is code hopping. So multiple pressing of a key fob out of radio range of the Scirocco may cause problems with loss of code recognition on that fob.

By accident, what is written above may have been done the "reset procedure" laid out in the manual (Booklet 3.1)which is:

- Remove driver's door handle keylock cover.
- Press unlock on the fob.
- Within one minute, insert the key into the driver's door handle lock and unlock.

The section titled "Synchronising the remote control key" also carries the warning not to press it repeatedly while out of range. This is all on page 45 in my manual but there are different standards of 3.1 Booklet and I know pagination differs. In the index it is listed as "Remote Contro Key - Synchronisation"

I'll also add that I found one of my key fobs, the little rascal, flashing its little red LED when I put it down one day recently. So I went out to the Scirocco, to see what the alarm was doing, only to find the driver's window rolling down and the Scirocco unlocked!

So I wonder if this type of event is the cause of failing to unlock because it's been self activating in your pocket while being out of range of the Scirocco. A sharp technical tap has sorted out mine and its not re-appeared...... yet! It was like the unlock microswitch in the fob was jammed on.

(Each of the two encoded fobs the Scirocco remembers and and it rememebers what settings have been programmed by the user. Notice this one day when using the spare and the passenger mirror setting changed for reverse with Mirror down. I think it also works this way with some other settings used in the MFD.)

I presume that this repeated pressing out of range function is to protect your car against a thief who has acquired your keys going round a car park pressing the remote to see which car it works with.
Having said that - the range on these remotes is quite extensive which probably overcomes that protective function

There is coding in the 09 Controller (white dash dials) to use indicators and/or horn with the unlocking/locking (which the alarm drives). So in theory, its possible to not have the indicators light up or horn beep if someone is concerned about that give away.

The red dash dials do it in Controller 46 - see the Roccopedia.
