MFC Gear Advice
Sorry if this has been discussed before but I did not find it anywhere. The MFComputer on my 122 manual Rocco keeps advising me to go up to 5th and sometimes 6th gear when I am on 40mph in a normal urban road... I feel it is telling me I should be entering a dragcar competition instead, really. Any ideas why? Seems and feels a bit crazy to go up to 6th on a 40mph road.
Re: MFC Gear Advice
All in the aid of economy as far as I'm aware, optimum economy on the advice of the computer. I do find myself doing what it says even though at times it is to the detrement of driving conditions.
Re: MFC Gear Advice

Re: MFC Gear Advice
Economy sounds good, given the investment. I now find myself looking at the MPG more often. Cool gadget!
It's a manual btw, not DSG. It certainly makes me very conscious after considering myself a great manual driver. Puts my likes to shame, I guess.

Re: MFC Gear Advice
I knew this was on the DSG boxes but didn't know it was on manuals too. Not got it on my 1.4 160 bhp though. Must be a newer addition.
Don't know how the 122 would perform but in the 160 40mph in 5th is perfectly acceptable on a flatish road in steady moving traffic. Even though there is little difference in gear ratios between 4th and 5th you would need to change down to 4th if you wanted to pull away quickly or climb up a hill.
I suppose you could also "coast" at 40mph in 6th on a flat open road but I'd be concerned about the risk of straining the engine by not changing down when more power was required.
I suppose its by using the gears to that extent that the official fuel consumption figures - which I can never get near - are obtained. That and the fact that the tests are carried out on a rolling road with no wind rsistance

Re: MFD Computer Gear Advice
Not a DSG fit, manual gearbox only.ZephyR wrote:I knew this was on the DSG boxes but didn't know it was on manuals too. Not got it on my 1.4 160 bhp though. Must be a newer addition.
It was introduced on 2.0ltr TSI & TDI Manual Gearbox Scirocco GT models as of Wk45/09 with Highline MFD. When the 1.4TSI 122ps (manual only available) was introduced in the UK, 01.02.10. It also has it as standard as part of the Midline MFD.
I suspect if the Multi-Function Steering Wheel option is ordered with the manual gearbox on a standard (non-GT/R) Scirocco model, the Highline Computer will have it. ie. for the 1.4TSI 160ps & 2.0TDi. manuals The pricelist is not specific in stating this. .
Although the DSG doesn't have it, my 7 speed DSG (with 1.4TSI 160ps) goes to a higher gear quickly in auto mode and light throttle ...... 5th by 30mph, 6th by 35mph and 7th by 40mph. It appears to change up when the next gear rpm will be initially about 1,400rpm. (Ratios are different to a manual). My rpm is 1,360 in 7th gear at 40mph. If I ask it to accelerate on light throttle, it will in most cases drop down to 6th momentarily until I relax the throttle, upon which it goes back to 7th.
Straight from the Vehicle Certification Agency website.
C.: How is the fuel consumption test conducted.
A: The test is outlined in Directive 93/116/EC and provides results that are more representative of actual average on-road fuel consumption than previous tests. There are two parts: an urban and an extra-urban cycle. The cars tested have to be run-in and must have been driven for at least 1,800 miles (3,000 kilometres) before testing.
Urban Cycle:
The urban test cycle is carried out in a laboratory at an ambient temperature of 20ºC to 30ºC on a rolling road from a cold start, i.e. the engine has not run for several hours. The cycle consists of a series of accelerations, steady speeds, decelerations and idling. Maximum speed is 31mph (50km/h), average speed 12mph (19km/h) and the distance covered is 2.5 miles (4km).
Extra-Urban Cycle:
This cycle is conducted immediately following the urban cycle and consists of roughly half steady-speed driving and the remainder accelerations, decelerations, and some idling. Maximum speed is 75mph (120km/h), average speed is 39mph (63 km/h) and the distance covered is 4.3miles (7km).
Combined Fuel Consumption Figure:
The combined figure presented is for the urban and extra-urban cycle together. It is therefore an average of the two parts of the test, weighted by the distances covered in each part.

Re: MFC Gear Advice
I have it on my Midline MFD. Maybe it was added when the colour was changed from red to white?
