They are testing this new Hyundai Coupe alongside a VW Scirocco, so if it's not going to be better, then the Hyundai engineers are doing something wrong!!!
There could be an ill wind blowing for Volkswagen’s Scirocco! Hyundai’s new Veloster coupé is due in UK showrooms in 12 months’ time – and our spies have captured it undergoing back-to-back testing with its German rival.
The newcomer is a replacement for the Coupé SIII, and prices are set to start at around £16,000. Its sporting credentials are emphasised with a low-to-the-ground stance, raked windscreen with blacked-out A-pillars and smart central exhaust.
What’s not obvious from the pictures is that the Veloster will get asymmetrical doors. The driver’s side has a single opening, but there will be two separate doors on the opposite side, rather than a Mazda RX-8-style barn-style arrangement. This set-up is being re-engineered for right-hand drive, too.
Power will come from a new 140bhp 1.6-litre direct-injection petrol engine, while a 200bhp turbo version will follow. There’s speculation that the latter will feature Hyundai’s first dual-clutch transmission, too. Diesel power hasn’t been ruled out for the Veloster, but it’s unlikely at launch.
It certainly looks like it could be interesting. Reminds me more of a mini 350Z. The question is whether people could be pulled away from the VW brand by Hyundai. I'm not sure they will.
Options: Gone but never forgotten; Sumatra, Cruise, Parking Sensors, Flat Tyre Indicator, boot liner, hatchbag, premium sills, SciroccoCentral stickers & hedgehog! Ordered 23rd June 09 Build week 41 Handover 17th Oct 09 Off to his new home July 2016 after nearly 7 years & 88800 miles.
I'd never buy a Hyundai "ALDI TT" over a Roc, but VW are falling a little behind in technology - next car could be a BMW (not a sinfully ugly 1 series), their standard "20" 2.0 Diesel is looking a lot better than a TDI now - 185PS and 380NM of torque, as well as superior fuel economy thanks to the efficient dynamics stuff, VW need to catch up.
The only thing going for the Hyundai is the massive warranty on offer - these cars are cheap and ugly inside, but if VW are as reliable as they'd have you believe in years gone by they'd be giving at least 5 years warranty (like Toyota and Honda are now offering).
2013 - Tornado Red MK7 Golf GTD on order
2011-2013 - Rising Blue 170GT
2009-2011 - Pewter Roc 140GT

2005-2007 - Black Pearl Golf 140TDI GT
2003-2005 - Black Pearl Polo 1.9TDI
Surely the funny door arrangement will make it heavyer on the nearside, I woundn't want to drive a lopsided car, it would handle like a pig. And I cant stand them imatation rims either, They make me feel sick.lol. The only thing that will sell the Hyundai is the stupidly long warentee. But when its 7 odd years old and that runs out how much of that 16 grand price tag will have been lost compared to the Roc'.

This and I wouldn't buy a Hyundai anyway, especially over a VW

Not the first though! Ford Escort Mk2 - 11 made with this door configuration. First was by accident of production parts timing on the assembly line at Halewood. The following 10 were genuine sales!

Isn't that the problem with the Mini Clubman? It is 2 doors on the right and 1 on the left, but doesn't change it for lhd/rhd markets. So in the UK you can let junior out of the back but only into the traffic!!
The mini doesn't swap sides for the UK market. They said it was too costly to change (something to do with repositioning the petrol tank). It'll be interesting to see if Hyundai does the same.
I also see it's got one of those silly split window tailgates.
who on earth designed that....... hope its got all the reversing gizmos as standard cos you're not seeing much with that C pillar and small rear window. letter box tail pipe too.
