Tyre Rotation

Post by Gary_Monkey »

I'm approaching 5,000 miles and was wondering when would be an ideal time to rotate the front tyres to the rear (and vice-versa)?

Thanks
Gary

Cheers C. Ever the helpful.

One thing though. After read said thread it isn't clear on what mileage is best to rotate your tyres.

That's an individual thing. If you drive your car hard then you should be rotating sooner than someone that drives theirs with a more caring approach :) Probably best to change them when you consider the fronts to be 50% worn, although there is a train of thought that you shouldn't rotate as the best tyres should always be on the back :?

as a rough guide you'll get 15-20k out of a set of fronts on a rocco

rocco chasis seems kind on tyres especially the rears

I'll be very lucky if I get past 9k miles on the front with the Bridgestone Potenza's :eyepop:

I'll never ever see that kinda mileage for 1 set of tyres on my cars lol. 1k miles this week, some spirited driving, and the fronts are looking a bit sorry lol.

So gonna move them round to the back in next few weeks. Just ticked over 5k miles overall (thats in the 3 months since I've had it...can't help driving it everywhere :D )

I'm planning on rotating my tyres front-to-back over Christmas as described in the manual as my fronts are getting worn and the rears are fine. Working in a one jack system, is there any quicker way to do this other than jack up, front wheel off, spare on, jack down, jack up, back wheel off, front wheel on back, jack down, jack up, spare off, back wheel on front. Repeat on the otherside. All this, plus cleaning when off, sounds like a long time which is kinda putting my off doing it.

Not got an couple of axle stands to hand or could borrow?

With the cleaning, that swap and clean took me 6 hours.

I used two hydraulic jacks and axle stands for this whole job a couple of years ago as once had a car collapse almost on me a long time ago with a car jack only.

Dang! 6hrs!!! Unfortunately nothing to hand or to borrow. Might either dingy the cleaning part or just give them a rinse. And spread the job over two days. One side one day, one side another.

Right, after a closer look this lunchtime I noticed something a bit odd with the tyres. My two rears match and are in good condition, my two fronts don't match. One is fine and one is on the way out. Bought the car second hand in July, so not sure the full history of the tyres, but guess whoever had it before got a flat hence the mismatch.

On the tyre that is worn (front drivers side), it it significantly more worn in the centre. Minimum I could measure was 2.2mm compared to 4mm towards the outside. Think my plan will be just to swap this one back to front and leave the other side as is as the other three tyres all have plenty on them. Might review my tyre pressures as well as other people have discussed on here and drop them from the recommendation abit to even out the wear.

Getting mine rotated at the first service next month (car will be one year old with 6,500 on it by then). TBH the rears look new and the fronts only very slightly worn but will still rotate. Handed my old Golf 122PS in at the weekend with over 22k and still on factory fitted tyres!

I'm still on the factory P Zeros at 34k miles and that's without rotating them.

Aye, but are they legal?! Seriously, that's a lot of miles compared to other people on here, especially for the fronts on a diesel.

Of course they're legal. Just checked them at the weekend and they have just under 3mm at their lowest and just under 4mm at their highest. I've a new set waiting to go on as soon as the loest point gets under 2.5mm.

I'm quite surprised myself how well they have lasted but it's nesrly all motorway miles.
