Just got my R, upgraded from GTI 2.0 LOVE IT! Fuel?

Post by Serial45 »

Hey guys,
Just got my new Scirocco R DSG last week.

The difference between my manual GTi 2.0 and this is phenomenal, The acceleration, handling and raw power just seems like a car several brackets higher than the GTI 2.0.

The car has done around 450 miles.

The only gripe I have about it is the fuel - I mean depending on how I drove the 2.0 I used to get around 25-33MPG on urban use. I understand this is a much more powerfull car and it's going to eat the fuel supplies a lot quicker.
At present the onboard computer is reporting betweeen 17-21MPG (most i've seen is 21.6 mpg driving in normal mode with gradual acceleration etc).
But by my calculations I actually think it's doing a lot less that this. Most i've taken it to is around 5k revs.

Is this the normal, someone mentioned it will improve a lot more as the car finishes bedding in - but I can't see it.

Cheers all.

Mines a manual R with just under 1000 miles on the clock.

Sounds like you're really enjoying yourself as the best I've got is almost 38mpg just sitting in traffic going with the flow.

If I rag it then its well down into the low 20s :D

If I drive it enjoyingly without pushing it too hard, I get around 25-28 mpg....but driving normally and on the motorway, i'm well up in the mid 30's!!

You must be either really pushing it, stuck in first gear or there's something not quite right!!

Another thought however, I understand the dsg box learns your driving style and changes gear to suit, the harder you drive, the longer it stays in each gear so maybe your car has been driven hard from new and is staying in lower gears for longer!! Still dont think it should make that much difference!

Ahh this could be it mate, the car was not exactly 100% new, it was a demo car the shop had for a week, had 170 miles on the clock when we got it. If the car has been ragged around from the word go maybe the DSG has memorised the driver style and stuck to it?
Is there anyway of resetting this?

Went out tonight, did arouned 55 miles, ragged it a fair bit . Mixed between normal and sport mode, high revs, some paddle use hitting 5-6k revs, quite a few "foot down and go" starts. On board computer said average 17.2 mpg.

I can't believe how well this car handles the round, quite happily took bends at 60mph that would lose traction around 45 with the manual. I'm head over heels in love with the car haha.

Yes, with VAG-COM...... Bit long winded.

having got the forerunner to this engine in the goof in 20,000 miles have only got over 300 miles out of a tank (55l in the goof), i tend to fluctuate between 250/270, its thirst for super unleaded in noticable compared to the GT, in reality since it went Stage 1 it improved thanks to the uselful torque increase, engine begs to be driven and will reward

Thanks for this printed the instructions off. Out of interest can these settings be adjusted from the car computer, or would I need to get it setup with some proper gear / laptop - i.e. how do I set the settings like transmission tolerances etc.
Sorry for acting the newbie never really done anything like this before.

Not from the car's computer. You need a laptop with VAG-COM software and a connection lead plugged into the diagnostic socket under the driver's dash above the accelerator (lilac connection).

From the procedure, you don't set the tolerances, the car does what is called "basic settings" which effectively takes care of that aspect, ie. a built in self checking of acheived settings v tolerance limits. The procedure asks you to "Check and clear fault codes after successful test." Do the fault check part again after the drive. If all clear, the car has self checked and passed.

The dealer can do this for you but most likely discourage you as the DSG does adapt. I'd drive it for while, see how it is after 500 - 1000 miles and then make a decision on whether to proceed.
