First 500 - 1000 miles/km

Post by Sirius »

Hi all
Can anyone explaine to me, why you are driven softly in this period, my dealer tells me that the machine have been working for 1000 km ( 500 miles ) on factory, and they
shift all oil after that, so he think the car is ready to go all the way from the first day :)
Is there any other reason to drive carefully in the first period, then please tell me why, I`ve will follow your suggestions even if it will be hard
Thanks to all R owners and comming owners in this fantastic forum, and let us get many more beautiful pictures :hyper:

well actually i guess u don't need to anymore with VAG cars.

altho I've never had it confirmed properly, it does make sense that the engines are already "run in" at the factory, as it now comes with sythentic oil when you pick it up on day 1.

If engine was to be run it, they would put Mineral Oil in it, to help smooth the bores of the engine in the first few miles of its life. This i had on my Subaru Impreza. Then you change the oil at 1k miles to Semi or Full Sythentic oil.

Personally i restricted myself to 4k rpm in first 500 miles for the R, just to help the engine run in a bit more.

It's a bit psychological really, new car and all that. You just want to make sure it has a good start and be reliable during your period of ownership.

Excuse the ignorance but 'VAG' cars-what does that mean?

VAG is Volkswagon aktiengesellschaft which is usually written Volkswagen AG. That translates as Volkswagen Public Corporation. Recently they have changed to Volkswagen Group as the parent company.

When the main sub companies some time back were only VW and Audi in the UK, it was also Volkswagen Audi Group.

It's not just about the engine, you need to allow the brakes and tyres to bed in a bit aswell

the brakes i say are actually bedded in already.

i fitted a brand new set of R32 brakes onto my GTI...and the response of those in first 100 miles was wayyyyyyyyy different to the R from dealer.

Absolutely, when they say that engines are run in on the factory bench, there is nothing like "real world" running in, so I would always treat the car with respect, ie < 4000 rpm in the first 1000 miles, and gentle/moderate pressure on the brake pedal for the first few 100 miles. Some people may think that is just a bit too 'kind' to the car, but that is how I treat mine.

Once the engine is warmed up, drive it like you stole it.
