Pls help me with a quick decision

Post by mitb67 »

Dear Community,

I have recently placed the order for a 1.4TSI 160bhp M6 Roco (I drove it during a test drive, I love it).
However, the dealer called me and asked whether I would prefer to get a 2.0 210bhp TSI + DSG instead. The terms are very tempting.
Considering that I roughly drive 6k km per year out of which 60-70% in the city:

1. For those who drove both versions: would you prefer the 2.0 over the 1.4 ? Why ?
2. Would you take a DSG over manual ? I suppose is far more convenient in the city.
3. Is the 2.0 210bhp TSI euro 4 or 5 ? This makes a huge difference in terms of taxes here.

Looking forward for your help.
Much appreciated.

Best regards,

Tom

I haven't driven the 2.0 but just taken delivery of the 1.4. I was thinking of speccing the DSG box as everyone that has this seems to love it, BUT, as I there is a good chance I will keep the car longer than the 3 year warranty I went with the manual simply based on horrendous repair costs of the DSG gearbox.

I'm in the same boat as lancs lad, I'll probs have the car over 3 yrs and I've opted for the longevity and relative ease of repair with the manual box. Plus the DSG box left me feeling a little removed from the driving experience when I tried it.

I do have the 2.0 and I love it, can't compare it to the 1.4 tho as I've never driven one, but the 2.0 is fairly economical if you don't put your foot down too much.

I took the plunge for DSG and love it. It's like having 2 cars in one.

I'll be keeping the car for a long time and have no qualms about the reliability. They've made millions and millions of DSG boxes now and apart from a few isolated cases I haven't heard of any major glitches.

The 2.0 is proper quick if you're after pace. I haven't driven the 1.4 though.

1> Yes, because it's quicker and the engine sounds better. However it is more expensive to insure...
2> Definitely, especially if you drive more than 50% in traffic. Also it sounds much better than a manual when changing up gear under acceleration with a nice pop sound (in my opinion!). Also the paddleshift is very nice.
3> Not sure - try the vw website?

I went for 2.0 as there was no 1.4 at that time! The 1.4 is a very clever engine though I think I'd still choice the 2.0 now. 0-60 there isn't a massive difference due to getting the power down but I'd imagine the in gear acceleration of the 2.0 is definitely enough go swing it. Biggest appeal of the 1.4 would economy for me but the 2 litre Is surprisingly economical.

All this isn't mentioning the tuning potential either. Although the dsg was very tempting manual was the box for me as I like to feel I'm driving the car more. Again whether you plan to tune the car is also a deciding factor on the gear box.

I'm pretty sure the roc is euro ncap 5 star. This is regardless of model. Good luck with the choice

well if u poodle round the city that much, then 1.4 is fine. no need for a 2.0 in your circumstance.

mitb69 is in Romania & not necessarily all the countries are getting the R so that as tempting as it may be that may not be an option

Thanks for your replies. I will probably settle for the initial 1.4 160bhp with M6. Yes, true, the 210bhp is Euro 5. Confirmed by the dealer. However, I'll save with the 1.4 and get some more trims.

@Spamdog, @Trix...
Actually, you'd be suprised by the cars they sell here. The bigger, the more expensive, the better they sell. I'm a bit ashamed by that, considering that 20% of the population lives on the edge of poverty. The city is full of V12 S class mercs, M BMWs, and you can spot quite a lot of Ferraris, Lambos and Maseratis. No kidding. So what's an R ? Petty cash. You'll probably find the latest models on the streets here before many other countries. In a country with roughly 300 km of proper highway and no decent test tracks (the enthusiasts test their cars on abandoned airstrips) - this is a laughable phenomenon. I don't want to imply anything, just that some people here are wild about their "image" reflected by the things they buy, and they have a lot of money to burn. Huge social contrasts. However, the R is much over my budget.

Best regards to all,

Tom

All the above is very true about Romania, except the fact that the Roc R is not available for sale. However, you can get a standard Golf R for 29k euros, which i think it's less than 25k pounds. Pretty good deal, isn't it?
